Why are Amazon goods usually packed in large cartons? Have you ever wondered why a large logistics model like Amazon has to 'waste' a lot of packaging with small items? It is still an unanswered secret.

This question often occurs with each member of Amazon Prime at least once: you see the large Amazon cargo box is moved to the door but when opened it found it is filled 90% with brown paper and then there is a small item in it. In fact this seems to be wasteful, annoying and can be avoided. However, it continues to occur daily.

what does it mean?

Obviously, many people think that Amazon is using wasted packaging. Perhaps they chose larger sized boxes to transport to the car more easily. Perhaps they are intending to do so formally to meet some bureaucratic quotas. Or maybe they just have a standard box size and can't do it smaller. In all research on this topic, I - the author of the article thought of the most reliable explanation:

Amazon sometimes packs items into a carton box too large, obviously due to data entry errors.

A commentator on the article on Gizmodo explained a few years ago that the system for Amazon packers knows that the box is automatically taken when scanning an item. The system pulls from the product description to determine the box size . Maybe the seller was mistaken when plugging the product size into the system. For example, they may confuse feet and inches on an iPhone carrying case or provide an unpacked size of a yoga sheet instead of a shipping roll size.

When the packer receives a box that is too large, they can flag in the system and suggest a smaller sized box. This will be reviewed and changed, but sometimes, at least one of the items will be out of the box size incorrectly. This system relies on people to fix errors.

This theory is said to be more prestigious in a recent Reddit topic. While rejecting the statement that the big box is the result of some UPS conspiracy (Uninterruptible Power Supply - system of continuous supply), westward_man user explained:

The box size is determined by the size of the item, not how it will be packaged when shipped.

When receiving a large carton box for a small item, it's usually because someone [mistakenly] measured the product, for example, they measured a package of 6 products instead of individual items.

Even sources of citations do not mention Tetris games, which will be very difficult to handle software.

All this has been mentioned, you should know that you can give feedback to Amazon about their packaging. Visit amazon.com/packaging and you can tell them if the box is too large, the item is not protected enough or the item is hard to open.
