Differences between file types.

  1. Technically, there is no difference between a PPT (or PPTX) file and a PPS (or PPSX) file.
  2. With PPT and PPS files, you can actually rename the extension whenever you want and the presentation will remain the same.
  3. With PPTX and PPSX files, you cannot rename as you like.

The difference lies in the way PowerPoint treats them:

  1. By default, PPT and PPTX files open in edit mode in PowerPoint allowing you to use all toolbars and commands.
  2. By default, PPS and PPSX files open in slideshow mode (play - presentation) and you don't see the PowerPoint interface. When the presentation is finished or you exit using the ESC key, PowerPoint will exit.
