What are MD files?

There are several different file formats that use the MD file extension. It is important to recognize the file format before you decide which program you need to open or convert the file.

Markdown document files

The .MD or .MARKDOWN file can be a Markdown document file. It's a plain text file that uses the Markdown language to describe how the document should be formatted. README.md is a generic MD file containing text instructions.

File SEGA Mega Drive ROM

SEGA Mega Drive ROM files also use the MD file extension. They are a digital representation of a physical game from the SEGA Mega Drive console (known as SEGA Genesis in North America). Emulator software uses MD files to play games on the computer.

File Moneydance Financial Data

Another file format that uses the MD file extension is Moneydance Financial Data. The MD file stores transactions, budgets, stock information, bank accounts and other related data for the Moneydance financial software. However, newer versions of the program use the .MONEYDANCE file instead.

File MDCD

When one or more files are compressed using MDCD compression, the result is called an MDCD Compressed Archive file, which also ends in MD.

File Machine Description

Another type of MD file is reserved for Machine Description files. These are programming files used on some Unix systems to compile software programs.

File SharkPort Saved Game

SharkPort Saved Game files are also stored with the MD file extension. They are saved PlayStation 2 games created by the SharkPort device and used to copy saved games to the computer.

Note : MD is also an abbreviation for some technology terms. Mini disc, microdrive, machine-dependent and manufacturer discontinue are a few examples. Command Prompt md make directory) is a different case. However, none of those terms relate to the file formats described in this article.

Since these MD files are just plain text documents, you can open a file with any text editor, like Notepad or WordPad in Windows. Here are some specialized tools to open and convert Markdown files:

1. MarkPad is an editor/viewer that opens MD, MDOWN, MARKDOWN and MKD files.
2. You can convert MD to HTML with a program called Markdown. It was released by the creator of the Markdown language, John Gruber. Another MD-to-HTML converter is available through the Markdown Preview Plus extension for the Chrome browser.
3. Convert MD to PDF with the free online Markdown converter at Markdowntopdf.com.
4. Dillinger is an online MD editor that runs in a web browser. It also converts markdown files to HTML and PDF.
5. Use CloudConvert to save the MD file to DOCX MS Word format. Other text-based formats are also supported, such as HTML TXT, RTF, and PDF.
6. Another online Markdown converter you can try is available at pandoc. It supports many formats, including DocBook v5, ICML, LaTeX, S5, and MediaWiki.

Open and convert SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive ROM files

MD files in this format can be converted to BIN (Sega Genesis Game ROM file format) using SBWin. Once in that format, you can open the ROM with Gens Plus! or Kega Fusion.

Open and convert Moneydance Financial Data files

Moneydance opens MD files created in that program. The program creates the MONEYDANCE file by default, but since it replaces the older format, the MD file can still be opened.

To convert the MD file to a format usable in other software like Intuit Quicken or Microsoft Money, use the File > Export menu in Moneydance. Supported export formats include QIF, TXT and JSON.

Microsoft Money has been discontinued since 2009, but luckily you can convert the MD file to a usable format by replacing Microsoft's software, called Money Plus Sunset, which has a file extension of . MNY.

Open and convert MDCD Compressed Archive files

The mdcd10.arc file compression/decompression software can open MDCD archives.

After the files are decompressed, you can re-compress them in a new format like ZIP, RAR or 7Z. This is basically how you can "convert" this type of MD file.

Open and convert Machine Description

MD files are Machine Description files similar to the Markdown document files mentioned above in that they are plain text files that can be read by any text editor. You can use any of the text editors linked above to open these MD file types.

There's probably little reason to convert the Machine Description file to another format but if you need it in some other text-based format, then text editors can certainly help you out. this.

Open and convert SharkPort Saved Game files

The PS2 Save Builder used to open MD files is the SharkPort Saved Game file. It can also open several other similar file formats such as PWS, MAX, CBS, PSU, NPO, SPO, SPS, P2M, XPO and XPS.

The PS2 Save Builder tool can also be used to convert MD files to several similar formats.
