Archaeologists say that the statue was accidentally found when archaeologists lifted the lower part of the statue of King Amenhotep III buried in sand.

Sourouzian said: " The statue of Queen Tiye appears next to the left leg of the statue of King Amenhotep III. And this statue will be the next main focus of this excavation ."
