Strange beauty of lava pillow under the Atlantic Ocean

Dr. Isobel Yeo and researchers from Helmholtz Geomar research center in Kiel city, Germany have traveled to northern Iceland to record the surreal beauty of lava pillow at Eggvin Bank volcano in the Atlantic Ocean.

Lava pillow is a type of lava that contains characteristic pillow structures and is only formed when lava erupts under the sea.Water has a cooling effect that quickly forms an outer shell that overlaps.The type of lava pillow in the volcanic rock has its own characteristic that the blocks of the pillow shape are discontinuous and have an average diameter of about 1 m.

Seawater heats up due to active volcanoes, which can filter out metals from the surrounding lava flow.When sea water comes back to cold water, these metals settle down.In the picture is the iron hydroxide sediment precipitated around the lava pillow with a variety of colors.

Large sea lily clusters, small sea stars and other sea creatures invade this pillow lava line that make it look like the starry sky.

Large lava flows can be broken down by many cracks caused by movement or penetration of deep magma in the crust.Cracks or trenches can be tens of meters deep, hundreds of meters wide and kilometers long.

Pillow-shaped lava form is usually made up of small conical blocks of diameter sometimes up to several hundred meters.This lava pillow is located at the knee of the conical lava and is probably the last eruptive lava layer.
