Electronics firm Samsung Electronics plans to produce a series of high-definition 16-inch (HD) panels for laptops in the third quarter. Along with Samsung, two rivals AU Optronics (AUO) and LG.Philips also plan to announce similar screens next year, and the competition between these companies will be very exciting.

High-definition screen panels are developing quite fast. It is estimated that in the fourth quarter of 2007, 17% of all LCD TVs are consumed as high-definition screens. With screen segments of 40-inch or more, 57% of these LCD TVs are HD products.

The trend of HD screens also extends to the notebook field. Samsung has expected to launch the first high-definition 16-inch screen in the first quarter of this year, but the plan has been postponed until the third quarter.

Some laptop vendors have plans to launch 16-inch laptops equipped with HD screens in the first half of this year, typically Samsung, Acer and HP.

As for Samsung, the company can produce high-definition 16-inch screen panels, with 16: 9 aspect ratio and 1920x1080 resolution, belonging to the 5th generation screen (5G).

The 16-inch HD screen is expected to cost between $ 60-70, more expensive than the 15-inch WUXGA screen. Laptops with this type of screen are also equipped with Blu-ray DVD optical drives. System vendors estimate that the market share of 15.4-inch WUXGA laptop computers will account for about 46%, while a 16-inch HD screen laptop will be slightly less than this number.
