Qualcomm built a new Wi-Fi chip for the Wi-Fi 802-11ax generation
Qualcomm has announced a Wi-Fi chip for phones and tablets today compatible with the upcoming Wi-Fi generation.
Qualcomm has just announced a Wi-Fi chip for phones and tablets compatible with the upcoming Wi-Fi generation. The company said it was the first product to offer 802.11ax features to manufacturers and was the first technology to support WPA3 encryption, protecting user passwords and privacy.
The Wi-Fi network of 802.11ax is expected to be widely adopted next year, providing higher network throughput and less power usage than the previous generation, 802.11ac. Qualcomm's new chip allows phone and computer manufacturers to start building technology compatible with the chip. It is called Atheros WCN3998 technology, and manufacturers intend to start adopting this technology in the next few months.
Qualcomm's chips support older Wi-Fi versions, so they can connect to routers that don't support the new standard (mostly at this time). Wi-Fi chips also support Bluetooth processing at the upcoming 5.1 standard. The chip is also integrated with other Qualcomm products such as TrueWireless systems, and it can improve speed when connecting to routers that support the recent 11ac Wave 2 standard.
To improve speed and reduce congestion, 802.11ax introduced new wireless technology and improved some existing technologies, such as MU-MIMO to connect multiple users at the same time. It uses a feature called Target Wait Time that can "wake up" the device at a certain time, effectively planning WiFi traffic to reduce congestion. This is especially useful when using high-speed WiFi, such as the evening when people watch videos and play more games.
