Learn about Personal Area Network (PAN)

A Personal Area Network (PAN) is a network that connects computers / devices within an individual's range. Because PAN provides network coverage in a radius of around a person, usually around 10 meters (33 feet).

Computer network is a set of interconnected computers / devices in which connection is established for the purpose of communication between computers / devices, to share resources, data and applications. . There are different types of computer networks that are designed to operate on the area they cover and according to the network requirements, type of service, and coverage in which they are classified.

What is a Personal Area Network (PAN) network?

A Personal Area Network (PAN) is a network that connects computers / devices within an individual's range. Since PAN provides network coverage within a radius of around a person, typically around 10 meters (33 feet), it is called a Personal Area Network. The Personal Area Network typically includes computers, phones, tablets, printers, PDAs (Personal Digital Assistant) and other entertainment devices such as speakers, game consoles, etc.

Thomas Zimmerman and other researchers at MIT's Media Lab developed the PAN concept for the first time. It is useful in home, office and small network areas due to its high performance in terms of flexibility and efficiency.

Types of networks Personal Area Network (PAN)

Personal Area Network networks can be of 2 types depending on its connection, ie wireless PAN and wired PAN. They are explained as follows.

Wireless PAN

Wireless Personal Area Network (WPAN) is connected through signals such as infrared, ZigBee, Bluetooth and ultra-wide bandwidth, etc.

Wired PAN is connected via cable / wire such as Firewire or USB (Universal Serial Bus).

PAN network example

Body Area Network

It is a cellular network that moves within a personal range, such as when a person connects his or her smartphone to a Bluetooth headset and moves.

Offline Network

In this, multiple devices are connected via Bluetooth or WiFi. Devices attached to the computer include printers, mice, speakers, and others that are integrated with a Personal Area Network (PAN) and do not use the Internet. Thus, a communication network is formed between devices used in a small space, such as at home.

Home Office (Home office)

In the Home Office setup, a separate, smaller network is set up for business purposes, separate from the network used by other home appliances. This network acts as a separate entity with many other devices connected for office purposes.

PAN's advantages and disadvantages

Here are some advantages of PAN:

  1. PAN is relatively flexible and offers high efficiency for a short network range.
  2. It's easy to set up and relatively low cost.
  3. It doesn't require regular installation and maintenance
  4. PAN is highly portable.
  5. Less technical ability is required to use.

Here are some disadvantages of PAN:

  1. Low network coverage / area.
  2. The limit for relatively low data rates.
  3. The devices are not compatible with each other.
  4. The available WPAN devices are a bit expensive.

The PAN applications

  1. Home and office
  2. The organizations and the business sector
  3. Medical and hospital
  4. Education at school
  5. Military and defense
