The clamshell netbook - the once-popular laptop series is now almost no longer developed. Asus, Acer . and many other computer companies have officially announced that they will not release new netbook models anymore.
However, that does not mean that the "founder" of netbooks is that Intel stops developing them.
Intel is expected to continue developing the Cedar Trail M processor platform to maintain the Classmate PC netbook line that will be sold in developing markets. The Classmate PC is a computer similar to OLPC, except that it is served for business purposes rather than as much as non-profit like OLPC. This is a new low-cost netbook with many different designs; including clamshell design, tablet, hybrid design (between laptop and tablet). And with the cooperation between Intel and Microsoft, Classmate PC will be able to run on the latest Windows platform, Windows 8.
Classmate PC is Intel's future generation of netbooks.
Some traditional netbooks using Intel's Atom N2600 chips are still being sold in some markets, especially in Southeast Asia and Europe. In addition, according to sources from supply chains in Taiwan, another reason that Intel and Microsoft decided to still develop netbooks, is to compete with Google's Chromebook platform as well as low-priced laptops. Today's Chromebook models, although they also have Intel chip models, are mostly using the chip and ARM giant's platform.
