The term continues to pour on Sony's head. The three giants on the laptop market began recalling thousands of laptop batteries manufactured by Sony after more than 40 cases of announcing about battery overheating.
According to Consumer Safety Commission, HP, Dell, Toshiba conducted 2.15Ah type lithium-ion battery collection made by Sony installed in many laptops sold worldwide.
Sony's faulty battery naturally caught fire and smoke was dangerous. 21 cases were damaged in property and 4 suffered minor burns.
Sony said the reason for the adjustments in the production line during the period from October 2004 to June 2005. This has affected the quality of batteries in some production lots. Sony also said that the reason may be because the metal foil in the battery electrodes is faulty. The battery produced after 2006 does not contain this error.
Among laptops with battery problems this time, there are HP Pavilion, Compaq and Compaq Presario computers manufactured from December 2004 to June 2006. Meanwhile, some Dell Latitude and Inspiron laptops shipped from November 2004 to November 2005 were also included in this recall. Toshiba plans to withdraw its Satellite and Tecra laptops from April 2005 to October 2005.
Sony says its VAIO laptop does not use batteries with this problem. However, last month, Sony had to recall 440,000 VAIO computers around the world due to loose some internal screws, close to the screen connection to the camera body - making the machine short-circuited, causing excessive heat.
The product safety committee advised users to use laptops on the 'death table' to remove the battery immediately and contact the manufacturer to be renewed.
This recall is unmatched compared to the 10 million battery "limit" that Sony had to go through in 2006 and 2007.
