How much electricity does your phone charge plug in constantly when not in use?

For convenience, many users have the habit of plugging in a power outlet 24 hours a day, even when not in use. So, does this harm or cost you electricity?

For convenience, many users have the habit of plugging in a power outlet 24 hours a day, even when not in use. So, does this harm or cost you electricity?

A ZDNet reporter conducted several tests to get the answer to the above question. During the test, this person used a WattsUp power meter, the device to measure the specific power level the device is using and a genuine 5W charger of iPhone 11.

The results show that the charger still consumes power even without plugging in any devices. Specifically, the iPhone's charger still consumes 135W of electricity each month, about 1.5kWh per year or 1.5 numbers of electricity. With non-original, cheap chargers, the power consumption in the same state is 10 to 20 times more.

Current electricity price of EVN of Vietnam Electricity ranges from 1,678 to 2,927 VND / KWh. If calculated at the highest price of VND 2,927 / KWh, a charger like that of an iPhone 11 plugged into a socket will cost about VND 4,500 per year.

A number not much compared to the convenience it brings, can plug the device into the charger anytime needed.

But on a worldwide scale, there are millions of chargers in the 'idle' state every day wasting millions of kWh of wasted electricity each year. Not to mention that there are many cheap, non-genuine chargers, the amount of wasted electricity will be much higher. Each KWh is equivalent to nearly half a kilogram of CO2 released into the environment.

Another point worth noting is the risk of fire when plugging cheap chargers constantly in the electrical outlet every day. So when not in use we should unplug the charger.
