Recently, experts from the Great Mayan Aquifer project led by archaeologist Guillermo de Anda have obtained a map of the ancient Mayan pyramids thanks to modern video recording technology. From the map, they discovered a secret tunnel inside the pyramid called Ossuary. They believe that this secret tunnel will lead to a groundwater cave (also known as cenote) - where the Mayans perform the sacrificial ritual, even though the passageway is now sealed.
Previously, archaeologists only knew about this underground water cave but not yet arrived. Experts hope, this discovery will help them decipher the mysteries of Mayan beliefs.
Dr. de Anda said, they will find a way to approach Ossuary and try to open this path to enter the structure below and see if it is the cenote underground cave.
Kukulkan is a thousand-year-old monument and named after the Mayan god, in the form of a giant feathered snake. According to legend, Kukulkan grew up in a cave and will appear with an earthquake.
In 2015 scientists found a huge sinkhole about 25 - 35m in size and up to 20m deep under the temple. At that time, they feared that the entire pyramid structure would collapse because there was an underground river below and this hole would carry water up.

The cenote underground cave is said to connect with many other sinking holes to the North, West and East of the pyramid. Above the cenote cave, there is a layer of 5m thick limestone, which is playing a foundation for the pyramid.
