NAS (Network Attached Storage) is a technology that uses storage devices attached directly to IP networks. NAS protocols allow devices on the IP network to access data to share.

Cnet said that upgrading the operating system to OS X 10.7 version makes it impossible for users to use third-party NAS server to make data storage device through Time Machine software. The reason for this is because Lion uses Netatalk with a new version that is different from the previous version. NAS server will only be compatible when the new firmware is updated.

Although it is still possible to identify a NAS server as a data backup device, when the backup operation on OS X 10.7 Lion takes place, users will always receive an error message "The network backup disk does not support the required AFP features" .

This error also occurs when recovering data backed up by Snow Leopard. Users can only access Time Machine application to see the backup data but can not do anything else.

Cnet said, Time Machine on Lion only encountered errors for NAS server. Users can still use other peripherals or a second hard drive on their Mac computer to backup data.

The technology website advises users to check if the NAS server firmware is compatible with Lion before deciding to upgrade to OS X 10.7.
