How to Reset Administrator Password on Windows

This wikiHow teaches you how to reset your Windows Administrator password using the Password Reset Tool in Windows 10. Attempt to enter your password. If it is incorrect, then click 'I forgot my password'.

Reset your Password

  1. Attempt to enter your password. If it is incorrect, then click "I forgot my password".
    1. As of Windows 10 version 1709 and later, password reset only works if you are connected to a Microsoft account.
    2. Check that Caps lock is not turned on.
  2. Enter your email address or phone number into the form Cortana pulls up for you. Cortana now assists with any complex processes, including initial setups and password resets.
    1. You need an internet connection for this.
  3. Check your phone for the code or the link. Enter it into the field on your computer.
    1. If you have two-factor authentication enabled, you will need to enter your verification code from your phone onto your PC.
  4. Enter your new password into the password field.
  5. Reenter your new password.
  6. Sign-in again with your new password.

Reset your PIN

  1. Attempt to enter your PIN. If it is incorrect, then click "I forgot my PIN".
  2. Enter your Microsoft account password into the password field to remove your PIN.
    1. If you forgot your Microsoft account password, then reset your password using the instructions above.
    2. Depending on your group policy, you may need to choose another PIN on your PC. If that is the case, then enter your new PIN into both fields that meets complexity requirements. Your PIN can only consist of numbers and has to be a minimum of 4 digits long.
