Google has filed a lawsuit against Rockstar - a coalition of Microsoft 's giants , Apple, Sony . for using a vague patent to threaten its partners and customers in the mobile industry. In the lawsuit, Google accused Rockstar's patent campaign to target hundreds of technology firms and ' cloud shadows on Android platforms ', especially Nexus devices.
The case is an attempt to protect Asus and companies using the open source Android operating system before the legal destruction of Rockstar. At the end of October this year, Rockstar stabbed eight lawsuits within a day with the defendant, Google and seven Android device manufacturers: Asustek, HTC, Huawei, LG Electronics, Pantech, Samsung and ZTE .
Although Rockstar is named ' rock star ', Rockstar is actually another suicide company, thanks to the huge copyrights collected from the telecom carrier Nortel. Rockstar does not manufacture products and apply patents in practice. Instead, the company employs many engineers to check other products, look for any violations that can be used to sue and 'tap ' money. General Manager Rockstar said Facebook, LinkedIn and all other companies violated the Nortel patent.
The lawsuit is a real risk for Android manufacturers because the ruling cannot be predicted from the court. Google seems particularly concerned about the Nexus phone line. The Internet search firm asked the court to clarify whether the " Nexus 5, Nexus 7, Nexus 10 sold directly or indirectly by Google" does not violate 7 patents belonging to Rockstar. These patents all involve basic functions like messaging and notifications.
However, in April, an appellate court in the US ruled that Cisco could not sue to protect customers who are using its routers from copyright infringement lawsuits. This could create a precedent that hinders Google in its efforts to save Android.
However, the copyright system is likely to change next year when the US Supreme Court announced it would reevaluate software patents used in the lawsuit, while Congress accelerated the new law to restrain the companies like Rockstar.
