Error in a series of popular virus scanning tools
According to Israeli security expert Andrey Bayora, by adding some data he called 'Magic Byte' to a dangerous file, an attacker could bypass many virus detection systems.
This issue affects a wide range of security products, including software from Trend Micro, McAfee, Computer Associates (CA) and Kaspersky.Bayora also lists some unaffected programs like Symantec, F-Secure and BitDefender."This is one of the most serious security vulnerabilities discovered in the past because it affects a variety of virus scanning tools," Bayora said.
Security technology is now widely available in computers, servers, networks and mobile devices.Therefore, they are becoming targets of crime.However, in the case of Bayora, some experts do not consider this a program error."The signature in the security tool is like a dictionary of known viruses. If a new risk is detected during the detection process, a new signature will be added. Bayora's virus editing and assumption "Unrecognizable software is not yet valid. Most viruses are changed in this way and CA considers them new variants," said Ken Williams, CA's representative.
However, Kaspersky and Trend Micro consider Magic Byte a software error and are upgrading.McAfee has not yet made a comment for the issue.
