Changing this setting on Windows 11 can make your system respond significantly smoother

Aside from the new features, perhaps the smooth interface and eye-catching visual effects are the factors that convinced many people to upgrade to Windows 11 immediately after its launch. However, it must be admitted that Windows 10 is still faster than Windows 11 (though not as bad as Windows 8).

Even when running in a virtual machine, Windows 10 feels smoother and 'lighter' than its predecessor. On Windows 11, animations sometimes feel heavy and lackluster, even on a fairly powerful PC, like one with a Radeon RX 7800 XT and a 144Hz display.

There is a simple solution to help fix this problem relatively thoroughly that not everyone knows: Turn off all motion effects (sounds simple, but surprisingly effective).

As soon as you turn off animations in Windows 11, you'll notice that everything feels faster and smoother: the Start menu, switching between virtual desktops, the context menu (not much faster, but still noticeable), Task View, and other interface elements. The most noticeable improvement is switching between virtual desktops: instantaneous and without the lag of the taskbar.

There are two ways to turn off motion effects in Windows 11:

  1. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Visual Effects and turn off the " Animation effects " option .

  2. Using the old " System Properties " tool : Press Win + R , type sysdm.cpl , switch to the Advanced tab , click Settings under Performance and uncheck the following options:
    1. Animate controls and elements inside windows
    2. Animate windows when minimizing and maximizing
    3. Animations in the taskbar

Of course, you can keep some of the effects if you want. If you turn all three of these options off, the " Animation effects " section in the Accessibility section will also be turned off automatically. Note that these settings not only affect the overall look of Windows 11, but also affect the effects in other apps, making them run smoother.

Note that this trick does not make your computer run faster or increase FPS in games, it only helps to remove motion lag effects – which still exist in Windows 11.
