When reviewing the early Aspire S3, PC World saw it as a basic ultrabook: compact, light, with the lowest price in these category laptops at the time. The early Aspire S3 had Intel's 1.6GHz Core i5 processor. However, its performance is only average.
The new high-end Aspire S3 has a more powerful processor: Intel's 1.6GHz Core i7 (capable of clocking up to 2.3GHz with Intel TurboBoost technology).
Instead of a traditional 320GB (5400 RPM) hard drive, the upgraded Aspire S3 will have a 256GB solid-state drive (SSD), making it faster to boot, with higher overall performance.
Both models of Aspire S3 ultrabook (old and new) weigh 1.36kg, 1.27cm thick. They have a 13.3-inch screen with a resolution of 1,366 x 768 pixels.
In short, spending an additional $ 400, your Aspire S3 will have a more powerful processor, better storage drive and become a fairer competitor with the similarly priced MacBook Air. The $ 1,299 MacBook Air is powered by Intel's Core i5 processor at 1.7GHz and offers 128GB of flash storage.
