The moon will have its own internet
The United States intends to return to the moon in 2024, as part of the Artemis program. This time, the astronauts plan to stay, so they need to build an Internet-like information network to connect space with Earth.
It is expected that the Internet on the moon will be called LunaNet.
This vast network began its journey at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland. It is designed to provide connectivity and services for missions to the moon. In fact, since 2019, proposals for this early Internet-like architecture have been put forward in response to a request for communication and navigation solutions for the small constellations of satellites around the Sun. moon.
Currently, NASA's team of experts is working hard to make LunaNet a reality. They built a system to limit network delays and disruptions, called DTN. This is the backbone for the "moon internet" whose job is to ensure that data travels through the network and reaches its destination even if it encounters possible signal disruptions.
LunaNet will be used by astronauts through multiple nodes (nodes) to communicate with the crew on and around the moon similar to how we use Wi-Fi on Earth.
LunaNet also helps identify potentially hazardous solar activity through the use of space-weather instruments and sends alerts directly to astronauts. These warnings are similar to the weather warnings we receive on earth.
LunaNet's science services conduct measurements on the moon to help researchers from Earth better understand the planet.
Overall, LunaNet will help the space agency gain a deeper understanding of space connectivity and be able to plan a future with journeys to other planets.
