When announcing Pixel 2 XL, Google said it would use a pOLED screen. So what does 'p' mean?
We have heard many types of OLED displays (organic light-emitting diodes), including AMOLED on Pixel 2 and other phones like Samsung's Galaxy series. But pOLED has never been explained by Google. Let's find out what kind of screen this is.

pOLED is part of the OLED display family

OLED panels are often found on high-end TVs, some Android phones and most recently the iPhone X.

In general, OLED is better than LCD (liquid crystal display, inherent in older Android and iOS phones) because they are more colorful as well as better contrast levels.

OLED also produces a more accurate black color because the black display pixel turns off completely. When the LCD is displayed in black, it will look more gray because the LCD is always backlit, even when displayed in black. The liquid crystal that lies in the backlit LCD of the LCD cannot completely block the light so the black is rarely perfect.

Pixel 2 XL uses pOLED screen with plastic instead of glass like other OLED displays

When the pixel is completely turned off to display black, OLED can improve battery life, especially when viewing content darker.

So what is the 'p' in the pOLED of Pixel 2 XL stands for?

The letter 'p' stands for 'plastic'. pOLED is a screen manufactured by LG, also a Pixel 2 XL manufacturer for Google. This screen uses plastic layer instead of glass like most other OLED panels. pOLED can also be found on LG's new V30 phone.

POLED is thin, light and cheaper than OLED

Depending on the type of plastic used, the pOLED screen can be very flexible, even foldable. This can bring about interesting design options in the future that OLED glasses cannot have.

Because the OLED screen turns off completely when displayed in black, it allows the mode to always turn on on the phone, when the phone can display time and other information on the lock screen without consuming a lot of battery.

It is similar to the AMOLED screen on Pixel 2

Pixel 2 uses AMOLED screen that Samsung's Galaxy series has been using since its Galaxy days since 2009. AMOLED is basically the same as pOLED because it has plastic instead of glass. However, it is unclear whether Pixel 2's AMOLED screen is manufactured by Samsung.
