As part of the ongoing '12 Days of OpenAI' event series, OpenAI today announced ChatGPT Projects, a new way for users to organize their topic-sharing conversations in a more streamlined and intelligent way.
By creating a project, users can keep their chats, files, and customization instructions all in one place. This allows them to easily return to what they were working on. Within a project, users can also use the ChatGPT canvas and search tool.
Users can create projects through the ChatGPT web experience or by using the ChatGPT desktop app for Windows. Support for mobile and macOS will be coming in the future. ChatGPT Projects is currently available to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Team users globally, with Enterprise and Edu subscribers coming in January. ChatGPT free users will also get a chance to try the feature, though at a later date.
Note that ChatGPT Projects currently only work with GPT-4o models. If you curate existing chats using o1 threads into projects, OpenAI will automatically convert them to GPT-4o, as o1 thread models do not support file uploads and custom instructions. The good news is that OpenAI Product Manager Kevin Weil confirmed on X that support for o1 threads will be added in the future.
In related news, OpenAI announced this week that it is starting to roll out Advanced Voice video upload, screen sharing, and image uploading capabilities in its latest ChatGPT mobile apps. This new capability allows users to chat with ChatGPT using video as well as voice, and even use Advanced Voice screen sharing to get information about what they're seeing on their screen. You can download the latest ChatGPT app from the Apple App Store and Google Play Store to try out the new feature.
