From the valley of Greek kings and Easter Island to the mysterious human head, a French philosopher came up with the idea of building a valley of saints in Brittany. This will be the place that contains the legends of the saints of this sacred land.
This project is being built on a steep hillside in the Brittany valley, northwest of France. In this land, there are more than 7,000 saints respected by the people but only a few are officially recognized by the Roman Catholic Church.
1000 granite statues representing thousands of saints in Brittany will cover this entire hill.
Philippe Abjean, a French philosopher, who always wanted every statue to symbolize a god in an ancient legend, came up with the idea of building this mysterious valley.
He wanted each statue to represent a god in ancient legends in Brittany and once lived in this area from the 3rd to 10th centuries.
Philippe Abjean hopes, through the statues of the saints, the people and tourists will better understand the mysterious history of the Brittany valley. In addition, he wanted to reflect on the importance of granite in Bretton landscape and the local economy.
The project started in 2008, and so far there have been 64 completed statues of over 3m high, up to 4.5m high, all monolithic.
Each statue in the valley of saints represents a certain saint, associated with local legends. Therefore, the whole valley is a blend of Celtic culture, Gallo-Roman culture and Christian culture. Thanks to the variety of artists participating in the project, each statue has an unmistakable style.
The project was initiated by philosopher Philippe Abjean but funded entirely through contributions from local communities and organizations. Therefore, anyone can sponsor a holy statue, choose his patron saint as well as choose the location of the statue on the hillsides.
Each statue costs about 350 million VND and takes 1 month to complete.Ironically, not true for the purpose of honoring local granite, most of the statues erected so far are carved from granite imported from China.
Valley of mysterious saints in the sunset. In the near future, this divine valley will be the soul of the sacred land of Brittany.
