How to Download PSP Games for Free

Although Sony recently replaced the PSP system with the PS Vita, the PSP is still a handheld game console with a wide range of titles. Read the tutorial below to learn how to play games for free on PSP.

Using Memory Cards for Extra Games

Buy memory cards. PSP games are recorded on UMD (Universal Media Disc) discs, the game will load the disc image file, or ISO, so you need to buy a memory card (MS) to store the game. PSP supports PRO-DUO memory cards, however you can use Micro SD with the PRO-DUO adapter. PSP supports memory cards up to 32GB. Buy a large memory card to store more games.

Format the PSP memory card again with the following steps.

Find and remove the cover on the left side of the PSP and insert the memory card.

Press the "Home" button in the bottom left corner of the PSP (the button with the PlayStation logo).

Use the scroll button to access "Settings" and then to the "System Settings" menu.

Select the "Format Memory Stick" item.

Confirm the action by selecting "Yes" in the menu that appears on the screen. The PSP device will then proceed to format the memory card (it only takes a few seconds).

Identify the firmware you have installed. Firmware is the operating system that the PSP uses to store data and execute functions. To play downloaded games (ISOs) you need to "hack" your PSP, a process that will be explained in detail below, but first you need to determine what firmware the device is running:

Click "Home."

Go to and select "Settings".

Open the "System Settings" menu.

Select the "System Information" item. The firmware version will be displayed on the screen.

Play Homebrew

Learn about homebrew. Homebrew is a program (like old games and game system emulators) written by freelance programmers and usually freely available to anyone who wants to use it. The downside of running homebrew on a PSP is that you have to hack the firmware to get it to install unlicensed programs.

Be aware of your own actions. Hacking PSP firmware is not a serious legal issue, but such an intervention would make it impossible to run commercial games. Although the homebrew community is always improving reliability and compatibility, many problems still exist. Back up all files and other electronic data to an extra memory card before proceeding, in case something goes wrong.

Update to the latest official firmware version of your PSP system. You can use official or custom firmware. The latest official firmware version on the PSP is 6.60. If you are running a version older than 6.60, you are advised to update to the new version because new titles do not work on the old firmware. Go to the official Sony website and download the latest firmware, which has very specific instructions on the update process. After updating to version 6.60, you install custom firmware (CFW).

Requires custom firmware. The CFW that works best with PSP models (1000/2000/3000/e1000 or Go!) is "PRO". All models are compatible with PRO CFW. Installation is as follows:

Download 6.60 PRO-C fix3 CFW. C2 is a newer version but it fails to play PSN games, so you are recommended to use PRO-C fix3.

USB mode access. Navigate to your PSP's 'Settings' menu and select 'USB mode'. Connect the PSP to the computer with the USB cable and open it on the monitor. Don't forget to insert a memory card into your PSP. Navigate to the root file of the memory card.

Copy firmware. Firmware consists of 3 folders (PRO Update, CPL Flasher and Fast recover), copy these 3 folders to the "PSPGAME" folder of the memory card.

Exit USB mode. Disconnect the PSP from the computer and exit USB mode with the appropriate selection. You can delete files on your computer if you want.

Install custom firmware. Go to the PSP menu and select 'Game/Memory Stick'. From here, select the 'PRO Update' icon. Press X to launch the firmware.

Remember the firmware. After installing the homebrew firmware, you need to permanently memorize or know how to restore the firmware to play homebrew games. The method will depend on the PSP model.

For 1000-series and 2000-series models, go to the 'Game/Memory Stick' menu and select the 'CIPL Flasher' icon.Press X to update the firmware permanently.

With the 3000-series and GO-series, the security measures won't let you remember the firmware. However, you can run PSP's Fast Recovery utility to restore custom firmware in this section.

Download homebrew games. Now everything is stable and running smoothly, you just need to go online and type 'PSP homebrew games' to find the results. Many games are emulated versions of older titles on other systems, while others are custom designed.

Commercial Game Title Copy (Illegal)

Be aware of your own actions. Game piracy isn't prosecuted like music or movies, but there's no guarantee you won't get in trouble. While the risk is pretty low, the only way to avoid legal trouble is to buy PSP games. When copying illegally, you run the risk of getting into trouble.

With smaller releases, you are hurting the game developer/publisher. Think twice before illegally copying original and original game if you want them to release more.

Download PSP games. There are two basic ways to find PSP game files and download them to your computer.

Torrent files. You can learn how to use torrents, in short you need a program to run the torrent game files you want, sometimes let the program collect a copy of the games from other users. You should not pay for torrents or programs.

Use the torrent getter to search multiple torrent libraries at once. Choose the file with the most positive reviews to make sure you don't download unwanted stuff.

Download games directly. There are many websites that offer free PSP games. Click until you get to a download link (usually a hosting site like uploaded.net or mega.co.nz), click it to activate it.

Generally, the PSP game file extension is .iso. Make sure that the file you download is or contains ISO format (in case of downloading ZIP and RAR files). Do not run or download any files with the EXE extension.
