Archaeologists hunt for abandoned Shoreham clues

Archaeologists are searching, discovering more about an abandoned historical ship in Shoreham, possibly the last remaining vessel, before it was destroyed by flood protection.

Specifically, a group of archaeologists from College London is conducting limited excavations of the remains of a wooden ship, located just off the eastern half of the Adur River in Shoreham under the bridge. rail.

Archaeologist Neil Griffin said the ship had broken, probably a fishing vessel from the mid-nineteenth century, in a "seriously degraded" state. He said: 'Perhaps this ship is of limited social historical value, but it may also be the last remaining ancient ship of two centuries ago and it is very valuable . '

In addition, the group also saw an area of ​​14x3.7m that could have been a house but was abandoned on the river bank in the 1960s.
