Windows 8 boots twice as fast as Windows 7

Microsoft's latest operating system has always been claimed to have a super-fast boot time and the PCMag site has done an elaborate test to prove how fast it is.

PCMag editor installs Windows 7 Ultimate (64 bit) version on Portege R835-P88 laptop with 2.5 GHz Core i5-2450M chip, 6 GB RAM, 500 GB hard drive and Intel HD Graphics 3000 graphics. Release tests, Windows 8 (64 bit) Release Previews are installed on the machine and take the same steps.

The time for Windows 7 to be ready for operation is 38 seconds while Windows 8 is 17 seconds. Microsoft's current operating system needs 12.2 seconds to shut down (shutdown) and version 8 only needs 9.9 seconds.

The two platforms work together to download 81 files of 500 MB capacity and 1 large file (under 1 GB) from the USB 2.0 drive. Windows 8 correctly predicts the time to complete copying but the speed is not significantly different.
