In 1799, British chemist Humphry Davy was the first to discover the strange properties of N2O gas. He and his colleagues collected the gas generated during the heating of ammonium nitrate crystals into a green silk bag. After removing impurities, they inhale it through a mouthpiece.

It was not until 1844 that Dr. Horace Wells used N2O gas in medicine. He used this gas to help patients extract tooth pain.
