Successfully compressed 16GB of Wikipedia text data into DNA strings
The Boston-based Startup Catalog, published successfully, compresses 16GB of English-language Wikipedia text data into genetic molecules, like molecules that exist inside the human body.
Over the years, computer storage technology has greatly improved from hard disks to chips with 3D stacks. But next-generation storage technology could be as old as life on Earth using a "new" method: DNA.
On Friday, Boston-based startup Catalog, successfully published 16GB of English-language Wikipedia text data into genetic molecules, like molecules that exist inside your body. people by creating a DNA recorder that can fit in a house that has reduced the furniture.
Catalog also said that right now some customers need special data storage can enjoy its machine.
DNA sequences are small and difficult to control but can store many different types of data. Catalog has combined a large amount of pre-fabricated synthetic DNA sequences, shorter than human DNA, to store more data.
The advantage of DNA compared to the latest miniature high-tech components is compact, chemically stable and because it is the foundation of biology on Earth, it will certainly not be as obsolete as magnetic rotating disks hard drive or CD properties, things are gradually disappearing.
Currently, Catalog has only announced one partner, the Arch Mission Foundation, which is looking for ways to store human knowledge not only on Earth but even in the solar system. Information about other customers as well as whether they charge a fee for DNA recording services has not been disclosed.
The Catalog of DNA recorders can write data to DNA at a rate of 4 megabits per second, which can be tripled, ie 125 gigabytes in a day if optimized. This speed is equal to the storage capacity of high-end phones today.
Catalog was founded by two MIT graduates, technology improvement director Nathaniel Roquet and CEO Hyunjun Park in 2016.
