Speed up your computer - 12 steps to have a computer that always looks like new
Your computer will become slow and sluggish over time and of course there will be hangs, jerks, lags. very annoying to use.
So how to make sure your computer always works stably and achieves the highest performance? In this article, I will show you how to optimize and remove unnecessary features on Windows so that your computer always works as stable as when you first bought it.
Please note to you that 'increase computer speed' here means keeping your computer running as stable as when you first bought it, not speeding up your computer faster. Want to be faster there is no other way but to upgrade the hardware. OK!
Basically, these tips will apply to all versions of Windows (Win XP / 7 / 8 / 10) and the method is relatively similar. You can refer to the following 12 steps to have a healthy, well-functioning computer:
1. Delete junk files
In the process of using Windows such as installing software, editing documents, editing files, etc., the computer will automatically create junk files, over time it will make your computer slow and take up more resources. Therefore, the first job is to periodically delete junk files.
Delete junk in Temp . folder
This folder contains a lot of temporary files during computer use, you can delete all files in this temp folder anytime you like. Here's how to do it:
Implementation: Open the run dialog box (Windows + R) and type the command %temp% => press Enter.
Then you press Ctrl + A => press Delete to delete or Shift + Delete to delete it permanently.
2. Disable Unnecessary Services and Startups
Disabling services and startup is also quite necessary and greatly reduces the load on your computer. When you install software, some programs will automatically activate the system startup mode, so this is the cause of your computer's slow startup and long shutdown.
Perform:
+ Step 1: Open the Run dialog box (Windows + R) and type the command msconfig => press Enter. A new window will appear, do the following:
+ Step 2: Scroll to the Services Tab and check the Hide all Microsoft services option to display all programs and applications running on the system. MUST REMEMBER TO TOUCH THIS OPTION!
Here, you select the applications that you do not need => and check Disable => then click Apply to apply the changes.
+ Step 3: Next, switch to the Startup tab to remove the programs that start with windows.
You should leave the really necessary applications such as unikey, idm, anti-virus software. only. For other things, Disable all to be able to speed up the computer startup.
3. Uninstall unnecessary software
The next thing to do is to remove the software (click to see detailed instructions) when you no longer use it to free up the hard drive as well as make your computer less sluggish.
To remove these software, you can go to Control Panel => select Uninstall a program to find unused software and proceed to remove it.
4. Use Disk Cleanup or Ccleaner
Another very important job is to use the built-in junk cleaner on Windows, which is Disk Cleanup, to clean all the above files on your hard drive partition.
Perform:
Open the run dialog box (Windows + R) and type the command cleanmgr => press Enter. Then you just need to select the drive you want to scan and click OK
Note: Priority is to scan the drive containing the operating system first, because this drive we manipulate and use the most, of course, there is a lot of garbage.
There is a very good support tool for you in this, using the garbage cleaning tool, Ccleaner software (recommended to use).
Tips : Should do this job once a month if you regularly use it to get the best results. (If you use less, maybe 2 months)
5. Periodically defragment the hard drive
In order for the computer to work stably, the hard drive defragmentation is definitely indispensable. There has been a very detailed article that blogchiasekienthuc has shared with you already, if you have not read it, you can see the causes and how to defragment the hard drive here.
Note: Absolutely do not defragment SSD hard drives, because the working mechanism of SSD hard drives is completely different. For SSDs, you do not need to perform defragmentation.
6. Resize the Recycle Bin
Each hard drive partition has a different trash capacity, the larger the partition, the larger the trash storage size.
Its working principle is that every time you delete a file on the hard drive, it will be moved to the recycle bin. And when the recycle bin is full, the older deleted files will automatically be permanently deleted from the computer, so the new file will push the old file down and it will delete in such a sequence.
Therefore, you should adjust the trash capacity accordingly. Maximize your hard drive space and speed up your computer at the same time. To do this, adjust as follows:
Perform:
Right-click the Recycle Bin and select Properties. Then select each hard drive partition to reset the storage capacity for the recycle bin.
As you can see, my BACKUP drive has a capacity of 244GB, and it creates a recycle bin with a capacity of 14548 MB (14.5GB). Very expensive right, you should leave 4-5 GB is reasonable.
7. Disable the System Restore function
System Restore mode helps users return the computer to the most recent operating state if your computer fails.
But I find this feature 'the benefit is less, the harm is much', not naturally that I say that.
By default, Windows will automatically save the state of the system day by day, so it will damage the hard drive and be a place for viruses. That's why I recommend you turn off this System Restore feature immediately.
Instead you can create yourself a backup ghost or use the RollBack Rx tool.
7.1. Instructions to turn off System Restore on Windows XP
- Right click on My Computer => select Properties
- In the System Properties window, select the System Restore tab, then tick 'Turn off System Restore on all Drives' and then click OK to finish.
7.2. Instructions to turn off System Restore on Windows 7/8/8.1/10
Do: Right-click My Computer => select Properties => switch to the System Protection tab => select Advanced system settings, select Configure
Then press Delete to delete previous backups => finally tick the Disable System Protection option and click OK to finish.
8. Set more virtual ram for the computer
One of the common reasons why your computer runs slow is lack of ram, if you have the conditions, you should buy more RAM for your computer, or if you can't afford it or are afraid to buy it, you can set more ram. virtual for computers.
Of course, it will not be as effective as real RAM, but it is also a very good way to help you limit the lack of RAM.
9. Enable Fast Startup on Windows 8/ 8.1
If you are using Windows 8 version, you can enable fast startup, it helps you integrate Shutdown and Hibernate features into the Start button.
To enable this feature, do the following: Go to Control Panel => select Power Options then select Choose what the power button does
Recommended: How to enable Sleep and Hibernate modes
In addition, to increase the boot speed of the computer, we have another way that is to increase the number of boot cores. By default it is 1, now you can leave it as 2 or 3 depending on the CPU multiplier in your computer. It's best to increase it to 2.
Do the following:
Open the Run dialog box (Windows + R) => next, enter the keyword msconfig => press Enter to execute.
A new window will open, go to the Boot tab => click on Advanced options.… => check the Number of processors line and select the number of cores you want. Here I will leave it as 2.
Finally click OK => Apply to apply.
10. Use anti-virus software
Another very important thing that you cannot ignore is anti-virus software. A strong and stable computer is indispensable for an antivirus program.
Antivirus software does not increase the speed of your computer, but it will keep your computer stable and avoid dangers on the internet very effectively.
11. Keep Your Computer From Overheating
If you are using a laptop, limit your use of blankets and pillows. You should put it in a cool place and should use a cooling fan for the computer.
An overheating computer will affect performance and is more dangerous than damaging hardware such as battery, main, hard drive, etc.
Therefore, I recommend that you immediately equip your computer with a heatsink (if you are using a Laptop). The price is also very cheap, just over 100k / piece. If you are using a PC, you can add a fan to keep the machine cool and working well.
Should see: Check hard drive temperature
12. Clean the computer regularly
The last important thing that I want to tell you is the regular cleaning and sanitizing of the computer. One of the causes of overheating is that the dust and dirt block all the openings, making the computer unable to release hot air. Therefore, you need to clean your computer regularly to keep it running smoothly.
Update: Applicable on Windows 10 Creator (Version 1703) and above
In addition to the ways above, if you are using Windows 10 Creator, you can apply an additional way to set up automatic hard drive cleaning so that the computer automatically deletes junk files, unnecessary temporary files to retrieve files. Free up storage space for the hard drive and also avoid viruses hiding inside.
Perform:
Click the Start button => select Settings => select System => select the Storage item => an interface as shown below will appear.
At the Storage sense section => you leave it ON as shown below => next click on the Change how we free up space line to set it up.
There will be options like:
- Delete temporary files that my apps aren't using: Delete temporary files that my apps aren't using.
- Delete files that have been in the recycle bin for over 30 days: Delete files in the recycle bin when 30 days have passed.
Alternatively, you can click Clean now to perform a manual cleanup of your hard drive.
NOTE NOTE NOTE: There is an extremely effective way to upgrade the computer. I am talking in a very serious way, very realistic and possible because the cost of upgrading is quite cheap. You just need to buy an extra SSD (120GB) to make the operating system, and upgrade more RAM if needed.
Your computer's speed will be greatly improved, and you will blame yourself for not upgrading sooner. Ok !
