New features in the Photos app on iOS 15

Apple has made some big improvements to the Photos app on iOS 15, adding some much-anticipated features and lots of unique capabilities that let you do more with your photos.

There's a new Memories feature that lets you relive your favorite moments, metadata information can be viewed and edited, Visual Lookup lets you identify plants, landmarks, and more. and with Live Text, you can copy and paste text from any image on your iPhone. Memories

The Memories section of the ‌Photos‌ app has been overhauled in ‌iOS 15‌, making it easier than ever to relive your favorite memories.

The Memories feature has a new look that includes cards with responsive titles, new animations and transitions, and multiple collages for a more cinematic feel. There are new looks added to Memories based on each photo and video. Apple uses Machine Learning technology to apply appropriate contrast and color adjustments for a consistent look. Apple says the feature is designed to mimic what people in charge of color grading at movie studios usually do.

When playing a Memory (a short clip consisting of your commemorative photos and videos), there is an interactive interface that allows you to tap to pause, play back the last photo, skip to the next photo, or move forward ( music designed to continue playing). Changing songs, deleting or adding photos, or adjusting the Memory look are done in real time without the need to recombine the images. To make navigating Memories easier, there's a new Browse view so you can see all your photos and videos in a panoramic view.

Live Text

Any text in photos or images on ‌iPhone‌ is now recognized by ‌iPhone‌ through the new Live Text feature.

Text in an image can be selected, copied and pasted, used with the Lookup feature, and can even be translated into another language. You can take a picture of an item with text in a foreign language and the text translated right from the photo.

This feature works with all images in the ‌Photos‌ app, and is also compatible with screenshots, Safari, and the live camera viewer.

Visual Lookup

In certain photos, ‌iPhone‌ can now recognize multiple objects, landmarks, animals, books, plants, artwork, and more. For example, if there's a photo of a flower on the ‌iPhone‌, you can use Visual Lookup to determine what flower it is based on a web search of images that Apple does automatically.

When viewing an image, if the "I" icon has a small star on it, it means you can check the image with Visual Lookup. Tap the Info icon and then tap the small leaf icon to open the search.

View and edit metadata

In ‌iOS 15‌, if you tap the new "Info" icon below the photo, you can see the camera used to capture, the lens, shutter speed, megapixels, size, aperture, etc. EXIF files you can get from the ‌Photos‌ desktop app.

In this interface, you can add captions and adjust the date and time of your photos through the added Adjust button. Prior to ‌iOS 15‌, none of this information was available on iOS devices.

Sync iCloud Photo Library Faster

Apple says that when you upgrade to a new device, iCloud Photos syncs faster than before, giving you faster access to your photo library than ever before.

Improved person recognition and naming function

The People album on ‌iPhone‌ has improved recognition for people appearing in photos, and the ‌Photos‌ app on ‌iOS 15‌ can detect people in difficult positions, people wearing accessories, and whose faces are obscured.

Apple has also added a full workflow to fix naming errors. When selecting a person, if you tap the "." icon and then select Manage Tagged ‌Photos‌, you can untag any photos that aren't that person. This is also the interface used to tag additional photos, if iOS finds untagged photos.

Add selection order for photo picker

The photo picker ‌in Photos‌ on iOS 15 lets you select photos in a certain order when you share them, so if there's a sequence of photos, you can be sure they're shared in the order you want.

Shared With You

If someone shares a photo or video with you in the Messenger app, that photo or video will show up in the new Shared With You section in the ‌Photos‌ app.

If it's a photo taken while you're present, it will appear in All ‌Photos‌ view and in Day, Month, and Year view, as well as in ‌ Featured ‌Photos‌ and Memories.

‌Photos‌ in the Shared With You section can easily be saved to your photo library, and you can reply to messages with a tap right from the Photos app‌.

Search photos with Spotlight

In ‌iOS 15‌, you can search your entire ‌Photos‌ library using Spotlight. You can search by location, people, scenes, or things in photos like plants or pets with Visual Lookup.
