How to Protect an iPhone 11

The iPhone 11 features a sleek design, high-quality camera, and faster processing speeds than the previous generations of iPhones. However, they can be damaged by both external and internal forces, it's important to keep it protected....

Method 1 of 2:

Using Protective Accessories

  1. Picture 1 of How to Protect an iPhone 11
Put on a protective case to guard against drops, moisture, and scratches. Purchase a fully enclosed protective case and install it over your iPhone 11 for the greatest protection against damage. Follow the directions on the packaging to correctly install your phone inside of the case so all of the ports line up properly and there aren't any leaks that could allow moisture or dust to enter the case.[1]
    1. You can find protective cases at Apple stores, at smartphone accessory stores, and online.
    2. Protective cases are more expensive than other phone cases and will make your iPhone bulkier, but they offer the greatest protection.

Use a folio case for a stylish way to protect your phone. A folio case resembles a wallet and folds over itself to keep your phone covered you aren't using it. Install your phone inside of the folio to guard against drops and scratches and to add a stylish accent to your iPhone.[2]
    1. Folio cases will not guard against moisture exposure.
    2. Many folio cases also include slots for cash as well as your credit and debit cards so you can carry it like a wallet.
    3. Look for folio cases at smartphone accessory shops and online.

Attach a wrist strap to your phone case to reduce the risk of drops. Connect a wrist strap to your folio or protective case so you can slide it over your wrist whenever you're using your phone to keep from dropping it. Attach the strap to your purse or bag when you aren't using your phone so it won't fall out.[3]
    1. If your case or folio doesn't have a place for you to connect a wrist strap, choose a strap that comes with an adhesive that you can use to connect it.

Tip: Choose a folio or case with a strap connected to it so always have it handy.

Place a protective film over the screen to prevent scratches. Remove the protective film from its packaging and take off the paper strip to expose the adhesive. Carefully line up the edges of the film with the edges of the screen of your iPhone 11 and gently press the adhesive side of the film against the surface of the screen. Use your hands to smooth out any bubbles beneath the film.[4]
    1. Even if you have a protective case or folio, placing a protective film over the screen is a great way to make sure it never gets scratched.
    2. You can order protective films online or pick one up from a smartphone retailer.
    3. Make sure you choose a film that's designed for the iPhone 11 so it fits your screen.

Cover your camera with a lens protector to keep it from being damaged. A lens protector is a clear covering that fits neatly over the camera of your iPhone 11 to keep it from getting damaged. Take the lens protector out of its packaging and remove the strip to expose the adhesive. Line it up with the camera on the phone and carefully press the adhesive side over the lens to install it. Smooth it out with your fingers to create a tight seal.[5]
    1. Many cases and folios leave the camera lens exposed so you can still take clear pictures. A lens protector will not affect your picture quality and will keep the lens safe from damage.
    2. Install a lens protector before you put your phone in a case or folio for double the protection.
    3. Look for lens protectors at smartphone retailers and online.

Taking Protective Measures

Enable the Find My app in case your iPhone 11 is lost or stolen. Go to the settings menu on your iPhone 11 and locate the 'Find My' app. Open the app by tapping on it and check to see if the sliding bar indicates that it is turned off or on. If it's turned off, press the sliding button so it turns green to indicate that it's on. If your phone is lost or stolen, Apple can track it to help you get it back.[6]
    1. If you don't have the app turned on, Apple may not be able to locate your lost phone.

Purchase AppleCare+ coverage to replace your phone if it gets damaged. Visit an Apple store, go online, or call the AppleCare+ phone line to purchase coverage that will replace your phone if it's lost, stolen, or damaged. Choose the coverage plan that is right for you and fits your budget so you can keep your phone protected.[7]
    1. Search online for an Apple store near you.
    2. To purchase protective coverage for your iPhone 11 online, visit: https://mysupport.apple.com/add-coverage.
    3. Call 800-275-2273 to purchase coverage over the phone.

Note: You'll need to be able to allow your phone to be inspected and provide a proof of purchase in order to purchase AppleCare+.

Choose a random PIN code to unlock your iPhone 11. Randomly select a sequence of numbers or letters for the PIN code that unlocks your phone to make it more difficult for someone other than you to access it if it gets lost or stolen. Write down your PIN and keep it in a secure location, such as a desk at home or in your office, so you have it in case you forget.[8]
    1. Though the iPhone 11 uses facial recognition to allow you to open your phone, if another person tries to access it, they'll need to enter a PIN code. Choosing a random one makes it more difficult for someone else to guess the correct code.

Delete apps that you no longer use to reduce entry points for hackers. The more apps you have on your iPhone 11, the more ways a hacker can breach it. Additionally, if you rarely use an app, then it may not be up to date on it's security features, which makes it an even easier target. If you don't use an app anymore, hold your finger over the icon until it starts to wiggle and a small 'x' appears on the top right corner of it. Press the 'x' to delete the app.[9]
    1. If you ever need to use the app in the future, simply download it again from the app store.
  5. Picture 10 of How to Protect an iPhone 11
Turn off the option to auto-join Wi-Fi networks to protect against hackers. Open up your iPhone 11 settings and select the Wi-Fi menu. Scroll down and locate the option to automatically join wireless networks. Make sure the sliding bar indicates that the feature is turned off to keep your phone from connecting to potentially insecure networks that could allow hackers to break into your phone.[10]
    1. A data breach could allow hackers to take your personal and financial information from your iPhone.
    2. As a general rule, only join networks that you trust to reduce your risk of having your phone hacked.

Download security updates to keep your phone up to date. Anytime your phone notifies you that there's a new software or security update, choose the option to download it right away to keep your phone up to date on the latest protective software. You'll need to connect your phone to a power source in order to download an update and it will likely take a few minutes.[11]
    1. Outdated security software is much easier for hackers to target and breach.
    2. Apple is always developing patches that will protect your phone against the latest security risks, so it's important to stay current!
