A slow computer is usually caused by one of four things: an overloaded startup, a process consuming CPU or memory, too little free storage, or aging hardware. Start with the safe checks below and change one thing at a time. That makes it easier to identify the cause and undo a change if necessary.
Identify when the slowdown happens
- Slow immediately after sign-in: check startup apps, background updates, and an old hard drive.
- Slow only in a browser: check tabs, extensions, and the browser's task manager.
- Slow in one application: update or repair that app and check its hardware requirements.
- Suddenly slow everywhere: look for a stuck process, recent software change, low disk space, overheating, or malware.
- Freezing with clicking or drive errors: back up important data immediately; the storage device may be failing.
1. Restart and retest
Restart the computer rather than putting it to sleep. This closes stuck processes, clears temporary memory use, and allows pending updates to finish. After signing in, open only the program that was slow. If performance is normal, add your other apps one at a time.
2. Find the resource-heavy process
On Windows, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager. Sort the Processes list by CPU, Memory, or Disk. On macOS, open Activity Monitor and review CPU, Memory, and Disk.
A brief spike is normal when an app opens. Investigate a process only if it remains unusually high and you understand what it belongs to. Do not force-quit unfamiliar system processes merely because they appear near the top.
3. Disable unnecessary startup apps
In Windows, open Task Manager > Startup apps. On a Mac, open System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Disable nonessential launchers, chat clients, updaters, and utilities, then restart. Keep security, hardware-control, accessibility, and required work software enabled unless you know their purpose.
4. Free storage space
Low free space can interfere with updates, caches, temporary files, and virtual memory. In Windows, open Settings > System > Storage and review Temporary files or configure Storage Sense. On macOS, open System Settings > General > Storage.
Start with large downloads, old installers, unused videos, and the Recycle Bin or Trash. Back up anything important first. Avoid deleting folders inside Windows, Program Files, System, or Library unless official instructions identify the exact item.
5. Update the operating system and applications
Install pending Windows or macOS updates and restart. Update the slow application from its built-in updater or official store. For drivers, prefer Windows Update or the computer and component manufacturers; third-party “driver updater” utilities can install incorrect software.
6. Check for malware
Unexpected ads, browser redirects, unknown startup items, or a sudden unexplained slowdown justify a security scan. In Windows Security, open Virus & threat protection and run a Quick scan. Use a Full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan when the symptoms persist or Windows Security recommends it.
Do not install several real-time antivirus products together. They can conflict and increase CPU and disk use.
7. Reduce browser load
Close tabs you are not using, update the browser, and disable extensions one at a time. Video calls, streaming pages, web apps, shopping add-ons, and VPN extensions can consume significant resources. Chrome and Edge include browser task managers that show which tab or extension is responsible.
8. Check heat and airflow
A computer may reduce its speed when the processor gets too hot. Place a laptop on a hard surface, make sure vents are clear, and listen for a fan that runs at maximum speed during light work. Shut the machine down before cleaning exterior vents. Internal cleaning, thermal-paste replacement, or a failing fan is better handled by a technician if you are not experienced with hardware.
9. Remove software you no longer use
Uninstall unused trials, old game launchers, browser toolbars, and manufacturer utilities you do not need. In Windows, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps. On a Mac, follow the developer's uninstall instructions; some applications include background services that remain if only the main icon is moved.
10. Review memory pressure
When available RAM is exhausted, the system relies more heavily on storage and switching between apps becomes slow. Check the Memory section in Task Manager or Memory Pressure in Activity Monitor. Close large projects and unused apps before deciding that more RAM is needed.
Do not rely on a universal RAM number. The right capacity depends on the operating system and workload, and many modern laptops have memory that cannot be upgraded.
11. Check the storage drive
An older mechanical hard disk can make startup, updates, and application launches feel slow even when CPU and memory use are moderate. Persistent 100% disk activity, file-copy errors, clicking, or frequent freezes can also indicate a problem. Back up first, then run the operating system's drive checks or the manufacturer's diagnostics.
Replacing a healthy HDD with an SSD often produces a large responsiveness improvement, but confirm compatibility and make a verified backup before cloning or replacing a drive.
12. Reset or reinstall only as a last resort
If the slowdown survives updates, a malware scan, startup cleanup, and hardware checks, a system reset or clean reinstall may help. Back up documents, recovery keys, application licenses, and browser data first. A reinstall will not fix inadequate hardware, overheating, or a failing drive.

Avoid “one-click speed booster” claims, registry cleaners, random driver packages, and deleting system files. If the computer contains important data and shows storage errors, prioritize a backup over further experimentation.
