The game was originally announced for May 29 on the first three platforms, but the date moved forward by one week. Check the official game site for current edition, DLC, and regional availability details.

Story and Gotham setting

The original story draws on Batman comics, films, television, and games rather than adapting one production scene for scene. It begins with Bruce Wayne's training and follows the formation of Batman's allies and rogues' gallery. That gives the campaign room to combine serious Batman imagery with the physical comedy expected from a LEGO game.

Gotham is an open world rather than a sequence of disconnected level hubs. Rooftops, streets, landmarks, hideouts, and the Batcave support missions as well as optional exploration. Vehicles such as Batmobiles and Batcycles help players travel around the city.

How the game plays

The game mixes close-quarters combat, traversal, gadgets, puzzles, collecting, and character-specific abilities. Its combat takes clear cues from the counter-and-combo flow associated with modern Batman action games, but the controls and LEGO presentation keep it approachable.

  • Combat: build combos, counter attacks, and use character abilities against groups of enemies.
  • Gadgets: use tools such as the Batarang and grapnel to fight, move, and solve environmental puzzles.
  • Exploration: search Gotham for activities, collectibles, hidden areas, suits, and vehicles.
  • Batcave: display and organize unlocked suits, vehicles, trophies, and other collectibles.
  • Co-op: local cooperative play lets a second player join supported gameplay.

Playable characters

Instead of offering hundreds of lightly differentiated characters, Legacy of the Dark Knight focuses on seven playable heroes and antiheroes: Batman, Jim Gordon, Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. Each has tools or abilities suited to particular combat and puzzle situations.

The wider cast includes Alfred, Lucius Fox, and a long list of villains. Confirmed antagonists range from the Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, Bane, and Two-Face to deliberately comic choices such as Condiment King and Kite Man.

What distinguishes it from earlier LEGO Batman games

The central change is focus. Earlier entries emphasized enormous character rosters and compact LEGO levels. This game puts more weight on Batman's life story, an explorable Gotham, modern combat, and a smaller group of characters with more distinct play styles. It still retains puzzles, collecting, destructible LEGO scenery, and humor.

Who is it for?

The game is a strong fit for Batman fans who want a broad tour through the character's history, LEGO players who enjoy collecting and replaying areas, and households looking for local co-op. Players mainly interested in online multiplayer should note that local co-op and online features are different; check the store listing for the platform-specific feature set.

Parents should consult the official age rating for their country and review the comic violence and themes themselves. The LEGO presentation is playful, but an accessible visual style does not replace an age-rating check.
