How to Fix Common PDF-to-Word Conversion Errors

PDF-to-Word conversion can fail for several different reasons: the PDF may use fonts that are not available on your computer, the document may be a scanned image rather than real text, or the converter may struggle with a complex layout. The right fix depends on the symptom you see.

Start with these basic checks

• Save a fresh copy of the PDF to your computer and confirm that it opens correctly.
• Update Adobe Acrobat or the conversion tool you use.
• Try converting a short, simple PDF. If that works, the original file may be damaged, encrypted, unusually large, or too complex for the converter.
• Make sure you have permission to copy or export the document. A password-protected PDF may restrict conversion.
• If you use an online converter, avoid uploading confidential documents unless you understand how the service stores and deletes files.

Fix “Sorry, we're having trouble converting your PDF”

This Acrobat message does not identify one specific cause. First restart Acrobat, install available updates, and try exporting the file again. If the problem continues, save the PDF under a new name and test a few pages rather than the entire document.

Change the Word export layout setting

If conversion completes but the page layout breaks, adjust the export settings before trying again:

1. In Acrobat, open Edit > Preferences.
2. Select Convert From PDF, then choose the Microsoft Word format.
3. Open the conversion settings and select the option that retains the page layout.
4. Confirm the change, restart Acrobat, and export the PDF again.

Menu names can vary slightly by Acrobat version. Retaining page layout usually preserves positioning better, while a flowing-text option may produce a Word document that is easier to edit.

Fix a browser-based conversion failure

If Acrobat's web service or another online converter reports a file-conversion error, check the browser and connection:

• Reload the page and sign in again if the session has expired.
• Try a current version of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.

Fix garbled text and incorrect fonts

Why the converted text cannot be edited

If you can select the whole page only as one image, the PDF is probably a scan. Run optical character recognition (OCR) before exporting to Word. OCR creates a text layer, but it can misread blurred pages, handwriting, columns, and decorative fonts, so proofread the result.
