How to Find Archived Emails in Gmail and Move Them to Inbox

Gmail does not put archived messages in a separate Archive folder. Archiving simply removes the Inbox label, so the message remains in All Mail and in Gmail search. To restore it, open the message and choose Move to Inbox.

Find an archived email with Gmail search

The fastest method is to search for something you remember about the message: the sender, subject, a phrase, or an attachment. Gmail search includes archived mail by default.

• From a sender: from:name@example.com
• Words in the subject: subject:invoice
• Messages with attachments: has:attachment
• Before or after a date: before:2026/01/01 or after:2025/12/31

Combine operators to narrow the results—for example, from:name@example.com has:attachment. An archived conversation normally appears without the Inbox label. Search can also return sent mail and other messages, so the absence of that label is the useful clue.

Find archived emails in Gmail on a computer

1. Open Gmail and sign in to the correct account.
2. In the left menu, click More if the full list is collapsed.
3. Select All Mail.
4. Browse the list or use the search box to narrow it by sender, subject, or date.

All Mail includes inbox and archived messages together. It does not mean that every message displayed there is archived. Look for a conversation that does not show an Inbox label.

Find archived emails in the Gmail mobile app

The process is essentially the same in Gmail for Android and iPhone:

1. Open the Gmail app and confirm the account shown in the profile menu.
2. Tap the three-line menu in the upper-left corner.
3. Scroll down and tap All Mail.
4. Open the message you need, or use the search box at the top.

If several Gmail accounts are connected, search applies to the account or inbox view currently selected. Switch accounts before concluding that the message is missing.

Move an archived email back to Inbox on the web

1. Find the conversation through search or All Mail.
2. Open it, or select its checkbox in the message list.
3. Click Move to Inbox in the toolbar. If it is not visible, open the More menu.

The Inbox label is applied immediately, and the conversation returns to your inbox. This does not create a duplicate.

Move an archived email back on Android or iPhone

1. Open the archived conversation in the Gmail app.
2. Tap the three-dot More menu.
3. Tap Move to Inbox.

You can also touch and hold a conversation in a message list, open the More menu, and choose the same command. Interface placement can vary slightly by app version, but the command name remains the key.

If you still cannot find the message

• Check that you are using the correct Google account.
• Open Trash and Spam; these are not the same as archived mail.
• Search with fewer words in case the subject or sender name differs from what you remember.
• Try the sender's email address instead of the display name.
• Check whether a filter automatically labeled, forwarded, archived, or deleted the message.
• If conversation view is enabled, open the entire thread; the message may be grouped with related replies.

Archive versus delete

Archiving keeps a message in the account and removes it from the inbox. Deleting moves it to Trash, where Gmail may permanently remove it after the retention period shown by the service. If you want to clear the inbox but may need the message later, Archive is the safer command.

To archive a restored message again, select it and click or tap the Archive icon. You can always locate it later through search or All Mail.
