Features of travel router
Travel routers (also known as mobile hotspots) often have some characteristics that distinguish them from other broadband routers:
- Compact size - Many travel routers are only a few inches wide and can be easily pocketed, so convenient to move.
- Battery powered - Travel router with built-in battery, provides up to several hours of use without plugging in the power outlet.
- Connection sharing - Provides the ability to connect online when no wireless hotspot service is available. Travel routers can access the Internet via mobile phone connection sharing (Tether). High-end mobile routers combine integrated mobile modems so there is no need to use connection sharing.
- Support for advanced Wifi - Travel router clients can join hotspot points as Wifi clients and share connection with other clients via its own integrated access point.

A mobile router can be used to:
- Internet access in areas with only mobile services
- Help a family share a paid Internet connection at a hotel
- Allow traveling business people to easily share and send files
- Stay connected when hiking or sailing outdoors
Many manufacturers of full size traditional routers also create mobile hotspots such as Novatel, Huawei, Netgear and Linksys. Mobile vendors often sell travel routers using their own brands.
