Slow internet can come from the service line, modem or optical terminal, router, Wi-Fi conditions, one device, or the application you are using. The fastest way to find the cause is to compare a few controlled tests instead of changing many settings at once.

Run a useful baseline test
- Pause downloads, cloud backups, updates, VPNs, and streaming on the network.
- Test a computer connected to the main router by Ethernet.
- Test the same device over Wi-Fi next to the router.
- Repeat the Wi-Fi test in the room where the problem occurs.
- Record download speed, upload speed, latency, packet loss if available, time, and connection type.

1. The internet plan or shared link is saturated
A household's total traffic shares the same internet connection. Video streams, game downloads, cloud backups, cameras, and large uploads can consume the link and raise latency for everyone else.

Open the router's client list and Task Manager's Network column to find active users. Pause or schedule heavy transfers. Correctly configured QoS can prioritize calls or games, but it cannot create extra capacity. If normal simultaneous use consistently exceeds the plan, an upgrade may be justified.
2. Weak Wi-Fi signal or poor placement
Wi-Fi loses strength through distance, walls, floors, metal, and other obstructions. Place the router in an open, elevated, central position. Test 2.4GHz for reach and 5GHz or 6GHz for compatible devices closer to the access point. Attach the supplied antennas and avoid enclosing the router in furniture.

3. Radio interference and crowded channels
Neighboring networks, Bluetooth devices, some cordless equipment, and other sources can compete for spectrum. Automatic channel selection is a sensible default, but a crowded environment may benefit from a channel chosen after measurement. Do not assume that hiding other network names reduces interference; it only changes what Windows displays.

4. Damaged or negotiated-at-a-low-speed cable
A bad Ethernet cable, connector, or port can cause errors, disconnections, or a low link rate. Reseat both ends, inspect for damage, and replace one cable at a time with a known-good unit. Check the Windows link speed and the router port indicator. A connection negotiating at 100Mbps cannot deliver gigabit throughput.
5. Router, modem, switch, or power fault
Restart the modem/ONT and router without pressing their factory Reset buttons. Test a computer from a router LAN port and temporarily bypass an optional switch with a known-good cable. Repeated reboots, dead ports, unusual heat, damaged power hardware, or settings that will not persist can indicate hardware failure.

6. Incorrect multi-router configuration
Two routers can work together, but unintended double NAT, competing DHCP servers, loops, and duplicate static addresses can cause intermittent behavior. In a typical home extension, place the secondary device in access-point or bridge mode when one main router should handle routing and DHCP. Do not simply disable DHCP or change address ranges without mapping which device owns each function.
7. One computer is using bandwidth or has a software fault
Sort Task Manager by Network usage, check startup applications, pause synchronization, and disconnect a VPN for comparison. Update the network driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer's official support page. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, use rollback when available.

Malware can generate traffic or consume resources, but a slow startup alone does not prove infection. Run the built-in security scan, install operating-system and browser updates, and investigate unknown processes. Reinstalling Windows is not a first-line antivirus step. 8. Provider or regional network issue
A provider outage, maintenance event, damaged local line, congested neighborhood segment, or upstream routing problem can affect many users. International routes can also slow when a backbone link is impaired, but a single slow site does not prove that an undersea cable is damaged.

Check the provider's official status channel and compare domestic and international services. Save test times and results. A phone hotspot can be a temporary backup, but watch the mobile data limit and avoid exposing a weak hotspot password.
9. Weather or physical line conditions
Weather effects depend on the access technology and local infrastructure. Water ingress or physical damage can affect copper lines, fixed wireless links can be sensitive to obstruction or severe conditions, and fiber itself is resistant to electromagnetic interference but its equipment and routes can still be damaged. Report recurring failures that correlate with rain or wind so the provider can inspect the line rather than assuming the problem is unavoidable.
10. The remote service, DNS, or route is slow
If most sites are fast and one is slow, the problem may be the remote server or route. Test another browser, disable extensions temporarily, and compare another network. Changing DNS can improve name lookup or repair a failing resolver, but it does not increase the bandwidth of a transfer that has already started.
When to contact the internet provider
Contact support when Ethernet tests on multiple devices remain far below the expected service, the modem/ONT reports loss of signal, every device disconnects together, or the line repeatedly fails after local cables and power are checked. Provide the account details, equipment light states, timestamps, wired test results, and steps already taken. That evidence is more useful than reporting only that “the Wi-Fi is slow.”
