How to fix VPN Error 800 error
Virtual private network provides secure connection between local client and remote server via internet. When you try to connect to the VPN and fail, you receive a VPN error message. There are hundreds of error codes that can occur, but only some codes are common. 800 "Unable to establish the VPN connection" VPN error usually occurs when working with virtual private networks. Unfortunately, this error code does not explain why the connection failed.
The cause of VPN 800 error
Error 800 occurs when you are trying to establish a new connection with the VPN server. It indicates that the VPN client commands (your computer) sent to the server failed. The reason for this error may be:
- Client device lost connection to local network
- The user has specified an invalid name or address for the VPN server
- The network firewall is blocking VPN traffic
How to fix VPN 800 error
Check the following to resolve this issue:
Confirm that the network connection between the client and server is working properly.
You can try to ping the server if you are unsure, although VPN servers can be configured to bypass ICMP requests. Try connecting again after waiting a minute or two. Trying to connect from another client device can also help determine if the connection problem only occurs with one or all devices.
Use the correct name and VPN server address.
The username entered on the client side must match the host name set by the VPN administrator. Selecting this way, users can choose to specify an IP address instead of a name. However, entering the wrong address rather than entering the wrong name. VPN servers can also be changed IP addresses, especially DHCP networks.
Make sure your firewall does not block the VPN connection.
To determine if the client's firewall is the cause of the VPN 800 error, temporarily disable it and try connecting again. Firewall-related errors indicate the need to update the firewall configuration with specific additional settings for some VPN gateways on the network - usually TCP port 1723 and IP 47 port for Microsoft Windows VPN. Users often make these changes on a broadband router.
If you have never connected to the local router in use, the router may need to update the firmware to be compatible with VPN. If it has been with the VPN before, this is not a problem.
The server may be connecting to too many clients. The server connection limits vary depending on how the server is set up, but compared to other capabilities, this cause is not very common. You cannot check this from the client side. In this case, the error usually only takes place in a very short time.
