How to enable and use Hyper-V on Windows 10
Windows 10 today is equipped with Hyper-V to help users create virtual machines directly without using other third-party software. In this article, Tipsmake will guide you how to activate and use Hyper-V on Windows 10.
1. Check the system
Not all CPUs support Hyper-V so we need to check them out before starting.
Step 1 : Press Windows + R to open the RUN window, then enter ' msinfo32 ' and press Enter to execute the command.
Step 2 : The System Information window appears, scroll down to the bottom to see if items related to Hyper-V are supported or not ( Yes - supported, No - not supported).
2. Enable Hyper-V on Windows 10
After we know that the system supports Hyper-V, next you need to enable it because on Windows 10 it is turned off by default.
Step 1 : Open the Start Menu and enter Control Panel to open.
Step 2 : Next, select the Programs tab .
Step 3 : Continue selecting Turn Windows features on or off .
Step 4 : Go to the Hyper-V section and check all the options inside. Then, click OK to save and restart the computer to activate them.
3. How to use Hyper-V on Windows 10
Once we have enabled Hyper-V, you can now use them to quickly create virtual machines.
Step 1 : First, enter Hyper-V into the Start Menu to open Hyper-V Manager .
Step 2 : For computers using Hyper-V for the first time, you must connect them to the Server - that is, connect to the original computer to create a virtual machine.
You choose Connect to Server. to connect to the real computer.
Step 3 : You choose Local Computer to select the computer we are using as the original Server computer for virtual machines.
Step 4 : Once connected, we need to create a private virtual network for the virtual machines inside. You choose Virtual Switch Manager.
Step 5 : When choosing a network connection, we will have 3 types as follows.
- External : Use with the real physical network card of the original Server computer (recommended).
- Internal : Virtual machines can use the network through the original Server.
- Private : Secure, isolate the virtual machine network from the original server outside.
When you choose the appropriate method, choose Create Virtual Switch to create it.
Step 6 : Next, you proceed to name the network connection so we can easily distinguish it. Finally, click Apply to successfully create a network connection for the virtual machine!
Step 7 : Now, we will come to the step of creating virtual machines on Hyper-V. In this article, Tipsmake will create via *.ISO file (ISO image file) .
The installation methods through different modes are still the same but different in the step of choosing the final operating system installation method.
You choose New -> Virtual Machine. to create a new virtual machine.
Step 8 : Next, go to Specify Name and Location , you proceed to name your virtual machine to easily distinguish it. Click Next to continue.
Step 9 : Next, we will go to Assign Memory settings to set the amount of RAM for the virtual machine. Please set up 1GB of RAM or more for them to run smoothly!
Step 10 : Now, we will go to Configure Networking to set up the network connection. You proceed to select the network connection we created in Step 6 above. Once selected, click Next to continue.
Step 11 : Next we will have Connect Virtual Hard Disk to set up the hard drive capacity for the virtual machine.
You choose Create a virtual hard disk and set a place to store all the virtual machine's data. For virtual machines, you should set the drive capacity to 40GB or more.
Step 12 : Next, we will come to Installation Options - select the operating system installation mode for the virtual machine. In this article, Tipsmake installs via *.ISO file. If you use another method, do the same!
Step 13 : Finally, we just need to confirm the installation information and click Finish to complete creating the virtual machine.
Step 14: After a while, the system divides the drive, runs the ISO file, and partitions, you will return to the main interface of Hyper-V. At this time, below your original Server machine there will be an additional virtual machine with the name you have given.
Now, you can click Start to start the virtual machine.
Immediately, our virtual machine will boot and you just need to set up the operating system as usual.
In this article, Tipsmake has shown you how to activate and use Hyper-V on Windows 10. Wishing you success!
