Have you ever wanted to save a message on Facebook Messenger but worried about taking a screenshot? What would happen if the other person received a notification that you took a screenshot? Fortunately, this only happens in rare cases.
Unlike Snapchat, Facebook Messenger doesn't automatically notify people when their private messages are saved as screenshots. But sometimes it still happens…
Facebook notifies others when you take a screenshot of a self-destructing conversation.
Facebook Messenger uses end-to-end encryption, meaning messages are sent securely by default. But just because something is encrypted doesn't mean one party can't take a screenshot of the conversation.
However, if you're sending something private via Messenger, you can use self-destructing messages. These messages disappear after 24 hours. Sometimes, on older versions of Messenger, self-destructing messages don't disappear until 24 hours after the other person sees them.
When self-destructing messages are activated, Facebook will notify both parties if either person takes a screenshot. The notification appears in your conversation, so it's not easy to miss.
Even if self-destructing messages are turned off, screenshot notifications will still be displayed for up to 24 hours after those conversations were sent.
Is it possible to secretly record screenshots of self-destructing messages?
The same rule applies to screen recordings. If you're using self-destructing messages, both parties will be notified if either person secretly records a screen. This notification appears just like when someone takes a normal screenshot.
How to switch to self-destructing messages on Facebook Messenger
Want to send something private via Facebook Messenger? The best option is still a self-destructing message.
Simply open the app and navigate to the person you want to contact (or enter their name in the search field at the top of the interface if you haven't spoken to them before). Then tap on their name and scroll down to Self-destructing messages . Switch it to 24 hours .
If you can't find the option to create a self-destructing conversation, it means you or the other person don't have the latest version of Messenger.
Just remember not to send anything too sensitive because that person can still take screenshots of your conversation. Knowing when someone is recording your self-destructing messages is like "locking the stable door after the horse has bolted."
If the other person has a second smartphone, they could technically also take a picture of their primary device using the secondary one – in which case you wouldn't receive a notification.
Does Facebook notify others about other screenshots?
Facebook doesn't notify people if someone takes a screenshot of a Messenger conversation or a regular Facebook profile. You'll only be notified if someone takes a screenshot or records self-destructing messages.
This means someone could access your Facebook profile and take screenshots of your photos, likes, and posts.
This is a great lesson about privacy and security. Remember that everything shared online should be considered public, even if your Facebook privacy settings are very strict.
Is it possible to prevent someone from taking screenshots of Facebook messages?
There's nothing you can do to actually prevent the recipient from taking a screenshot of your Facebook Messenger message. But knowing that you'll be notified if they do is a good thing.
When testing screenshots of self-destructing messages on the Oppo Reno 10 Pro+, the app had the screenshot function disabled. However, this isn't the case for all devices, and other participants in the conversation may be able to take screenshots. So, be aware that while some devices may not be able to take screenshots of self-destructing conversations, others can.
Don't share anything online that you don't want to be made public. The internet isn't a private space, so don't put sensitive information or images online. You never know who might see these things. If you want to be safe, only talk about personal matters in person if possible.
Many services offer encryption, but screenshots are almost impossible to prevent. Take Snapchat, for example. Everyone knows that things sent there are designed to disappear, and users will be notified if someone takes a screenshot. But if someone is determined enough, they will find a way to preserve the message, like taking a picture with another device. So, always be cautious in all circumstances.
