Network speed test with Charter Speed Test
The Charter Speed Test, officially called Charter Communications Nationwide Speed Test, is a network speed testing tool provided and recommended by Charter, the main US Internet service provider. Check your Internet connection with Charter Speed Test for free. Although everyone can use this tool, it is best reserved for Charter customers.
How to check bandwidth with Charter Speed Test
Like most other network speed test tools, conducting Charter tests is simple, just one click to get started:
Step 1: Access spectrum.com and wait for the page to load. Because the test on this page uses Flash, it is necessary to use a device and browser that supports it.
Step 2: Touch or click the Begin Test button in the middle of the screen.
Step 3 : Wait for all three parts of the test to be completed, this process will take less than a minute.
When all is complete, a summary screen will appear, which will display download and upload bandwidth information along with Internet speed graphs during the test. Below you will also see some written results.
How Charter Speed Test works
Like most other network speed tests, Charter works by downloading and uploading pieces of specific size and recording time. It will use some simple formulas to calculate the number of Mbps. The speed test of Charter uses OOKLA software, which is used by many Internet service providers.
The difference between the random OOKLA test and the Charter Speed Test is an automatic combination of Charter with the nearest test server hosted on the Charter network.
Accuracy of Charter Speed Test tool
If you are using the Charter Speed Test to check how well the connection between the home computer and the server of Charter provides good Internet service, this test is "correct".
If you are interested in evaluating the actual Internet connection and how it performs in "real Internet", you can use a non-Flash tool (HTML 5), not hosted by vendors. Internet services like SpeedOf.Me or TestMy.net.
The Internet is a complex network of servers, routers, and other devices. Every website or service you use online uses a different path, the speed of the path to transfer information depends on many factors. Therefore it is difficult to say the accuracy of network speed testing tools.
Use Charter Speed Test when not a Charter customer
Some Internet service providers limit speed tests to customers on their networks, but Charter does not, they provide public network speed tests for all users. So, although you can use the Charter's network testing tool, it's best to use the speed tests of your Internet service provider.
