Microsoft: Should run Word in safe mode
To face the risk of being attacked by exploiting the latest security vulnerability in Word, Microsoft recommends that users run the application in 'safe mode' (safe mode).
In a security warning message released yesterday, Microsoft insisted that running Microsoft Word in safe mode did not help overcome the security breach mentioned above, but helped limit attacks that exploited the vulnerability. .
Microsoft is urgently researching and developing patches for Word. It is expected that this patch will be released on June 13th.
To start Word into safe mode, it takes two steps. The first step is to disable the Word feature used as a desktop email client via the following steps:
- Open Microsoft Outlook
- Go to Tools | menu Options and switch to the Mail Format tab
- Remove the checkmark in the box ' Use Microsoft Word to edit e-mail messages '
- Remove the check mark in the box ' Use Microsoft Word to read Rich Text e-mail messages '
- Exit Outlook
- Restart the system
The second step is to add the ' / safe ' command in the MS Word call.
- Right click on the desktop
- Select New / Shortcut
- Select Browse
- Find the file winword.exe (Usually in C: program filesmicrosoft office )
- Add / safe at the end of the path of winword.exe (for example "C: Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice10winword.exe" / safe )
- Click Next and Finish .
The newly discovered security flaw affects only Word 2002 and Word 2003. Often users are attacked through a 'malicious' Word file that is included via emails. Users are advised to be careful when opening emails.
