Step 1:

First, at the bottom of the page, double-click to display the interface for inserting headers and footers in Word.
Next, look at the Ribbon tab, Design, and in the Options group, check the box for Different Odd & Even Pages to number pages symmetrically.
Step 2:
Next, look to the left side of the screen, under Page Number > Bottom of Page, select the position and style you want for the first page. The odd-numbered pages will now be on one side.
Step 3:
Next, scroll down to page 2, click Page Number again, then select Bottom of Page, and choose a position symmetrical to page 1. Remember to keep the Different Odd & Even Pages setting enabled.
Alternating page numbers (alternating letters and numbers) in Word 2007, 2010, and 2019.
Step 1:
Set the position at the bottom of the page where you want to separate letters and numbers when numbering pages.
In Word, click Layout, then in the Breaks section, scroll down to Sections Breaks and select Next Page to separate the sections.
Step 2:
Next, click Insert > Page Number > Format Page Number… We will choose the page numbering style as text, and in the Page numbering section, check Start at as 'a'. Click OK.
