What Happens If a Computer Has No Antivirus Protection?

A computer may appear normal without active antivirus, but malicious files can run with less chance of being blocked. Learn the risks and how to check Windows protection.

A computer without active antivirus protection will not necessarily become infected immediately, but malicious files, downloads, attachments, and scripts have a better chance of running without being detected or blocked. An infection may remain quiet while it steals credentials, encrypts files, records activity, or uses the device as part of a larger attack.

On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft Defender Antivirus is built into Windows, so you may already have antivirus protection even if you never installed a separate product. The important question is whether a supported security product is active, updated, and reporting a healthy status.

Malicious downloads can run with fewer warnings

Attackers distribute malware through fake installers, cracked software, email attachments, malicious advertisements, compromised websites, and links in messages. Antivirus is one layer that can inspect a file before or as it runs. Without that layer, the user must recognize every dangerous item correctly.

Credential and personal-data theft may go unnoticed

Information-stealing malware can collect browser cookies, saved passwords, cryptocurrency wallet data, documents, and authentication tokens. A computer may continue to work normally while the data is being copied. Antivirus cannot prevent every theft, but real-time monitoring and behavior detection can block known and suspicious activity earlier.

Files can be encrypted, damaged, or deleted

Ransomware can encrypt local files and any connected or synchronized storage it can access. Other malware may modify system settings, disable security tools, or corrupt data. Antivirus is not a substitute for backups: keep at least one versioned or offline copy that malware cannot rewrite.

What antivirus does—and does not do

Antivirus can use known threat signatures, file reputation, cloud analysis, behavior monitoring, script inspection, and other methods to detect suspicious activity. It may block, quarantine, or remove an item and can scan files that are already on the computer.

It does not make unsafe behavior harmless. Antivirus may miss a new or carefully targeted threat, and it cannot repair every consequence of a stolen password or an unsupported operating system. Effective protection combines several layers:

  • a supported operating system and current security updates;
  • one active real-time antivirus product;
  • a firewall;
  • browser phishing and download protection;
  • multi-factor authentication and unique passwords;
  • least-privilege user accounts;
  • reliable backups.

Do you need to install another antivirus on Windows?

Not necessarily. Windows Security includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, Windows Firewall, and app and browser protection. For many home users on a fully updated Windows 11 PC, the built-in protection is a reasonable choice. A reputable third-party product may be useful when you need multi-device management, parental controls, identity services, a bundled VPN, or vendor support.

Do not run two full real-time antivirus products together. They can compete for file access, produce confusing alerts, and reduce performance. Windows normally disables Defender Antivirus when it recognizes an active compatible third-party product, then enables it again if that product is removed.

How to check protection in Windows

  1. Open the Start menu, search for Windows Security, and open it.
  2. Select Virus & threat protection.
  3. Look for the name and status of the active security provider.
  4. Open Protection updates and check for current security intelligence.
  5. Run a Quick scan. Use a Full scan when you need to examine all local files, or Microsoft Defender Offline when persistent malware is suspected.
  6. Return to the Windows Security home page and resolve any warning that you understand.

Signs that protection may be disabled or the PC may be infected

  • Windows Security reports that no antivirus provider is active.
  • Security settings turn off again after you enable them.
  • Unknown processes, startup items, browser extensions, or administrator accounts appear.
  • The browser redirects searches or displays pop-ups outside normal websites.
  • Files receive unfamiliar extensions or ransom notes appear.
  • Account providers report logins or changes you did not make.

A slow computer alone does not prove malware. Storage pressure, failing hardware, overheating, too many startup programs, and software bugs are common alternatives.

What to do if there is no active antivirus

  1. Disconnect from untrusted networks if you see clear signs of an active infection.
  2. Open Windows Security and try to enable Microsoft Defender Antivirus, or repair the licensed third-party product you intend to use.
  3. Install Windows updates and restart the computer.
  4. Run an updated scan. Use a reputable second-opinion scanner if the first product cannot complete a scan.
  5. From a different, known-clean device, change important passwords when credential theft is possible and enable multi-factor authentication.
  6. Restore from a known-good backup or reinstall Windows if you cannot establish that the system is clean.

Windows 10 reached the end of standard Microsoft support on October 14, 2025. Antivirus software cannot replace missing operating-system security fixes, so move to a supported release or an applicable extended-security path rather than relying on antivirus alone.
