The 'Connected With Limited Access' error in Windows

When setting up or using a Windows computer network, the Connected With Limited Access error message may appear for several reasons.

When setting up or using a Windows computer network, the "Connected With Limited Access" error message may appear for several reasons.

"Connected With Limited Access" error in Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10

Starting with Windows 8, this error message may appear on the Windows Network screen after attempting to connect to the local network via Wi-Fi as: The connection is limited.

This error may be caused by technical problems or with Wi-Fi settings on the local device (most likely) or due to problems with the local router (less likely, especially If multiple devices have the same error at the same time). Users can follow some of the following procedures to restore the system to a normal operating state:

  1. Disconnect Wi-Fi on Windows system and reconnect.
  2. Disable Network Adapter for local Wifi network then Enable again.
  3. Reset TCP / IP services on Windows devices using the 'netsh' command like 'netsh int ip reset' (suitable for advanced users and can perform this operation faster than rebooting).
  4. Restart the Windows system.
  5. Restart the local router.

These solutions do not fix basic technical problems. That is, they do not prevent the same incident from happening the next time. Update the network device driver to a newer version if it can be a permanent remedy for this problem (if the driver problem is the cause of the problem).

"Connected With Limited Access" error in Windows Vista

Windows Vista users sometimes see the following error message appear in the 'Connect to a network' dialog box: Connected with Limited Access.

This error leads to users losing Internet access, although it is still possible to share files on other local resources. Microsoft has confirmed that this error exists in the Vista operating system but is not frequently caused when connecting to a local network in the bridge configuration. The link may be wired to another PC, but users often encounter this error when connecting Wi-Fi wirelessly to a home broadband router.

Microsoft fixed this issue in the Service Pack 1 (SP1) Vista release.

A similar but more specific message may also appear: This connection has limited or no connectivity. No Internet access.

Things like this sometimes appear when users update computers from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1. Disabling and re-enabling the Windows network adapter will restore the system after this error.
