Microsoft will soon have a 12TB virtual machine
MIcrosoft has announced it will release a super-sized Azure VM that can support up to 12TB of memory in the near future. This is the largest memory configuration for a VM on a shared cloud and is part of the M-Series virtual machine.
The size of the new virtual machine comes from the Intel Xeon Scalable (Skylake) processor, which is optimized for computing cloud computing. The 12TB virtual machine will exploit the Intel XEON Platinum processor capable of supporting up to 28 CPU cores, more than 8 sockets and a maximum memory of 12TB.
Other relevant information includes:
- The new M-series virtual machine size ranges from 192GB to 4TB RAM. These virtual machines are now available and allow virtual machines to increase or decrease with more than 10 different sizes.
- The new SAP HANA TDlv5 optimizes configuration for Azure Large installs, which can be increased to 24TB memory.
- Introducing a new Standard SSD storage layer designed to use low-level (entry-level) testing. New storage layer can upgrade to Premium when needed.
Virtual machines in the cloud are invested by Microsoft
These new memory configurations are the next investment steps of Microsoft, to bring SAP HANA customers more choices for their work. As Azure's revenue from computing services continues to increase, we will see Microsoft focus on launching new features for this service.
