What is Google Play Services?

First, here is a quick explanation of what Google Play Services really is.

Google Play Services is a program that allows applications to communicate with Google software, such as Gmail, Google Search, and the Google Play Store. Without a Google Play service running, you cannot use any Google first-party applications.

Those who can't update it can still use Android app stores instead, like Amazon's App Store, F-Droid, etc. If your phone doesn't update to the latest version of Google Play, Sometimes you can get the applications you need through a process called sideload.

But before you give up installing Google Play Services, here's how it works on most Android tablets, TVs, and smartphones (with a few exceptions).

How to update Google Play Services

In most cases, Google Play Services will update itself without any problems. You need to consider updating the Google Play Services application if you have a problem.

Here's how to manually install the latest version of Google Play Services on your device.

1. Check Internet connection

Unstable Internet connection is the number one reason that Google Play Services does not update. Make sure you are connected to a stable WiFi network when updating.

If you still have problems, reboot the device to get rid of any temporary problems. Next, you should reboot your router.

2. Clear the Google Services cache

Removing the location of the temporary file or cache storage of Google Play Services is the best way to resolve the update. To do this, follow these steps (workarounds may vary slightly depending on your Android version and device).

First, go to Settings> Apps & notifications . Next, click See all X apps (the screenshot below shows all 95 apps).

From the list, find and tap Google Play Services . Then select Storage & cache from the list of options on its application page. Finally, click Clear cache on the results menu.

Once you have done this, reboot the device. If that doesn't work, repeat the steps above but choose Clear storage instead.

3. Force Play Services updates

After rebooting, try to update Play Services. You should not do this in most cases, but it is worth a try if you continue to experience problems.

To do this, visit the Google Play Services section in Settings as mentioned above. Expand the Advanced section and click App details to open the page on Play Store. If you use a phone, you can open the Google Play Services Play Store page to jump right there. The green button will show Deactivate if you have updated and Update if you can install the new version.

You can also do this by visiting the Play Store in your web browser and logging in with your Google account. Open the link to the Google Play Services page on Google Play and check for updates there.

For advanced users: Install Google Play Services Beta

The above will work in most situations. But if this is not the case, installing the beta version (an update not yet fully tested) of Google Play Services may force this app to update.

This method is not recommended, except where there is no other way. The good thing is that it can get your device working again. But if this method works, it will not update you to the latest version of Google Play Services. Instead, it will update to the test version of the software and that may break many of the applications you are using.

The process is very simple and is best done on desktop or laptop computers, where you sign in to the main Google account associated with the device. First, navigate to the Google Play Services Public Beta Program page. On that page, follow the link below the Subscribe title using the opt-in URL . Click Become a tester to join.

After signing up, Google automatically pushes the beta version of Play Services to the device. You can do this by following step 3 of the above procedure.

If you change your mind, you can leave the program at any time. Visit this page to opt out of Google Play Service. However, this may require you to uninstall Play Services before it works properly again.

When can not update Google Play Services

If you fall into one of these categories, your phone may not be able to update Google Play Services using the method outlined above.

Android 4.0 and below cannot update Google Play Services

As of 2018, Google no longer supports Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and below. That means if you own an Android device running one of those versions, you can't install or update Google Play Services. These users can install custom ROMs or try sideloading the Google Play Store replacement option as mentioned earlier.

Unregistered phones cannot update any Google software

If you've purchased your device in India, China, the Philippines, Vietnam or anywhere else in East or Southeast Asia, it's likely that it comes with an unlicensed version of Google Play Services ( or not certified). Google has recently blocked access to the Play Store for many of these users.

However, Google also left the door for registration. However, the registration process requires quite a few steps. Scroll down to the Device Registration section for information on how to do this.

Android devices have been greatly changed

If you've installed a custom Android version or modified your system directory via root, there's too much to consider when something goes wrong. The instructions provided here won't help much.

In order to use Google's software, such as Google Play, Gmail and Google Calendar, device manufacturers must obtain permission from Google. Some manufacturers don't want to do this inconvenience, and instead install non-certified copies of the Google software on their smartphones. Google has begun to rectify this on devices a while ago.

Unlicensed Android versions may still update Google Play Services. However, you need to register your device first with Google. The process is easy. Go to the Uncertified Device Registration page and follow the instructions.

Once here, you will need to obtain the device's Android ID Framework. The easiest way to do this is to use the Device ID application. Due to a problem on your part, you probably don't have access to Google Play. Therefore, you will need to download the APK manually and download it to install.

Then enter the Google Services Framework Android ID into the Uncertified Device Registration page. The process does not take place immediately and may take up to several hours. After registering with Google, you will be able to install Google Framework Services manually, which will allow you to continue using (and updating) Google Play Services.

Hopefully this guide has helped you to update Play Services without much hassle. If you need more information instead of just updating Google Play Services, Quantrimang.com has another guide that can help you. Refer to the article: Decode all the errors that appear on Google Play and how to fix them for more details.

The guide also includes tips on websites that legally store Android installation files for Google Play Services (as well as other essential Play Store software infrastructure). However, the article does not recommend manual installation in all cases. This comes with risks, such as being infected with malware or causing your device to be destroyed. Additionally, manual installation may take several hours. Sometimes upgrading equipment is the only cost effective option.

Hope you are succesful.
