How to check Windows computer using SSD or HDD?
Compared to conventional mechanical hard drives (Hard Disk Drive - HDD), Solid State Drive (SSD) is much faster and more efficient. Therefore, SSD is very popular as a drive with Windows installer, greatly improving the time to boot Win and launch the application.
If you recently purchased a pre-built laptop or desktop computer and are not sure if your system has an SSD, you can use the built-in Windows tools to verify it without Open the computer. Here are a few different ways to find out if the system has SSD, HDD or both in Windows 10.
How to see if you are using an SSD or HDD
- 1. Use the Defragment and Optimize Drive tool
- 2. Use PowerShell
- 3. Use Speccy (third party software)
1. Use the Defragment and Optimize Drive tool
Defragmentation tool in Windows 10 is often used to defragment drives. As part of Windows 10, the Defragment tool provides a lot of information about all physical drives on the system. You can use that information to find out if you have malnutrition.
1. First, search for Defragment and Optimize Drive in the Start menu and open it.
2. As soon as the Defragment tool is open, you will see all your partitions on the main screen. If you look at the Media Type section , you can see what kind of hard drive you have. If you have an SSD, the tool will list as Solid State Drive . If you have a normal mechanical hard drive, it will list it as Hard Disk Drive .
In the case of example, there are two drives: SSD to install Windows and HDD for regular storage, the Defragment tool is displaying both drives.
Once you've verified whether you have an SSD, just close the window. Don't worry about fragmentation. Windows will automatically defragment the drive weekly or monthly.
2. Use PowerShell
With PowerShell you only need one command to know if your computer has an SSD, HDD or both.
1. To get detailed information about the hard drive, you need to open PowerShell with admin rights. To do that, search for PowerShell, in the Start menu , right-click on the result and select the Run as Administrator option.
2. In the PowerShell window, enter:
Get-PhysDisk
Then press Enter to execute the command. This command scans and lists all hard drives on the system with lots of useful information such as serial number, 'health' status, size, etc. related to each physical drive.
3. As with the Defragment tool, if you see Media Type, you can see your hard drive type. If you have an SSD, Media Type will list it as SSD.
3. Use Speccy (third party software)
Speccy is a simple, free third-party tool that displays lots of information related to all system hardware like CPU, hard drive, motherboard, peripherals, network card, etc.
- Check the hardware system on PC with Speccy
1. Download Speccy here. After downloading, install and open Speccy with the shortcut or Start menu.
2. After opening Speccy, select Storage on the left panel. On the control panel, right Speccy will list all hard drives. If there is an SSD in the system, Speccy will add the '(SSD) tag ' next to the hard drive name. As can be seen in the image below, SSD with this tag and HDD are not.
The above are 3 ways to check if the computer is using an SSD or HDD. If you want to know more about your computer system, try checking the computer configuration with the article TipsMake.com has instructed. You can also check the status of the hard drive, see the hard drive temperature for a more reasonable way to use the hard drive.
