How to change the display language in Windows 7
If you buy a computer running the English version of Windows 7, however, English is not your native language, this guide will show you how to change the display language in Windows 7 to one of 30 languages supported by Microsoft on Win 7.
We will use Windows 7 Ultimate in this tutorial, but you can also apply to all other Windows 7 versions. Install Region and Language in Windows 7
- To get started, click the Start button (Windows Logo) to open the Start Menu .
- When the Start Menu opens, enter " change display language " in the Windows search box.
- The list of search results will appear in the Start Menu, click Change display language from the list.
- The Region and Language window will appear. Activate the Keyboards and Languages tab.
- Click the I nstall / Uninstall Languages . button
In order for you to use languages other than the default language installed in Windows, you will need to download them from Microsoft, then install the language pack for the language you want to use.
Install additional language packs from Windows Update
Install or uninstall display languages will appear prompting you to install the language to display or uninstall the display language.
Click Install to download the language pack.
You will then be prompted to choose the location of the language pack with two options, Launch Windows Update or Browse computer or network .
Unless you already have a language pack stored on your PC, click Launch Windows Update to download the latest language packs directly from Microsoft.
Use the Windows Update Optional Updates to download language packs
When you select the Launch Windows Update option , the Windows Update window will appear.
Note: Windows Update is used to download updates, security fixes, language packs, drivers and other features directly from Microsoft.
There are two types of updates that are usually available from Windows Update, important updates and must be downloaded immediately and updates are not required.
Language packs that fall into an optional update are not important, so you will need to manually select the language pack you want to use to download from Windows Update.
Click on the # optional updates link in the available (# refers to the number of optional updates available for download) in Windows Update.
Choose a language pack to download and install
The Select updates to install page will display a list of Important and Optional updates.
- Enable Optional tab.
- Select the language you want to use by adding a check mark next to the language pack in the list from the Windows 7 Language Packs section .
- When the language pack has been selected, click OK .
Download & Install language pack
You will be returned to the Windows Update page where you will click the Install Updates button to start downloading the language packs you have selected from the list.
After language packs are downloaded and installed, they will be ready for use.
Select the display language you want to use
When you return to the Region and Language dialog box, select the languages you just downloaded from the Choose a display language menu.
When you select the language, click OK to save the changes.
In order for the new display language to work, you will need to log out of the computer. When you log in again, the display language you selected will work.
