How to Translate Pages and Selected Text in Firefox

Firefox can translate a complete webpage, a highlighted passage, or text pasted into its translation page. The built-in translator processes text on your device, so page content is not sent to a cloud translation service. After the required language packs are installed, it can also work offline.

Make sure Firefox Translations is available

In current desktop versions of Firefox, open the menu, choose Settings, and select AI Controls. If Block AI enhancements is turned on, Firefox blocks its on-device translation feature along with other covered features.

You do not need to enable every AI feature. Under On-device AI, set Translations to Available (or Enabled, if you want to opt in). Choosing Blocked disables the feature and removes downloaded translation models.

Translate text pasted into Firefox

Type about:translations in the address bar and press Enter. Choose the source and target languages, paste or type the text in the left box, and read or copy the translated result on the right.

This page is useful when the text is not part of a webpage, such as a sentence copied from a document or message.

Translate selected text on a webpage

1. Highlight the word, sentence, or paragraph you want to translate.
2. Right-click the selection and choose Translate selection to [language].
3. Review the translation in the pop-up. You can copy it, close the pop-up, or choose Translate full page.

Use the language menu in the translation pop-up if you need a different target language. The choices depend on the language models supported by your Firefox version.

Translate an entire webpage

When Firefox detects a supported foreign-language page, it may open the translation panel automatically. If it does not, click the translation icon in the address bar, open the Firefox menu and choose Translate page, or right-click the page and choose that command.

1. Confirm the detected source language.
2. Select the language you want to read.
3. Click Translate. Firefox replaces the visible page text while keeping you on the same site.

To return to the source text, click the translation icon and choose Show original.

Manage translation preferences and language packs

Open the translation panel and click its gear icon to control prompts for the current site or language. These options can make Firefox always translate a language, never translate a language, or never translate a particular site.

To manage offline models, open Settings > General, find Translations under Language and Appearance, and open the additional translation settings. Install the language pairs you need or remove packs you no longer use. The first translation for a new language may download its model automatically.

Supported languages change as Firefox is updated. If the translation icon or a target language is missing, update Firefox and check the installed language list. Firefox’s built-in tool replaces the need for an older translation add-on for these common tasks.
