Why are Linux computers still important?

Phrases like 'The year of the Linux computer' or something like that will probably never appear on the market. Does this mean Linux computers have no power at all? Absolutely not! Computers running the Linux operating system are still great.

When is the 'Year of the Linux Computer'?

Dirk Hohndel, the head of Linux and Intel's open source technology engineer predicts that by 1999, Linux will dominate the computer market and replace Windows.

Two decades later, we are still waiting. Each year, we all expect the explosion of Linux, but nothing happens. On the market today, PCs and laptops running the Linux operating system account for only 2% of the more than 2 billion computers in use. That 2% falls to about 4 million. The current figure may be higher, however, it is only about 4.5 million.

However, Linux still lags in the market: more than 70% of websites are developed based on this operating system, more than 92% of servers running on Amazon EC2 platform use Linux. All 500 of the fastest supercomputers in the world are running Linux operating system. This operating system is always present in your smartphone, whether it runs Android or iOS. Currently, there are more than 2.5 billion Android phones in the world.

Any smart device in your home will be embedded with Linux.

Linux dominates the technology sector, not the computer market.

Why only 2%?

There are people who have never heard of Linux, or they don't know and don't care how the operating system works. There are Mac users who think they run Windows the 'Apple way' and Chromebook owners think their devices run Android. However, not everyone knows that both Android and Chrome OS are built from the Linux kernel.

Most people (including those who love technology) do not care much about what operating system inside their computer. All that matters is the complete hardware, fast performance and long battery life. In general, they want to own a device no less than anyone out there.

Of course, there are exceptions, those who really care about computer technology. They will decide to buy the device based on actual use, but this is only a minority. Even the Linux users here are in the minority.

There are several reasons why users decide not to choose Linux:

  1. Gaming: Although Linux's gaming capabilities have improved a lot over the years, users still have more choices on Windows.
  2. Linux doesn't run a fixed software: It's hard to use Photoshop, AutoCAD or Microsoft Office, which is why many people wonder. They do not like to use other software to replace or run with Wine emulators.
  3. Fear of new command line interface: They don't want to get used to new things.
  4. Don't want to be different: Users want to use what their family and friends all use.
  5. Don't care: They don't know things like free or open source software.
  6. Do not want to change: The user just wants to work alone.

Hardware is the answer?

Dell and HP are the two companies that provided hardware with Linux pre-installed between 2007 and 2004. System76 has been specifically designed for high-end computers and laptops since 2005. There is a new wave of operating systems. Linux on computers, for example, Tuxedo super strong and Pine64 good price.

Munich was a famous city that switched from Windows to Linux in 2004 and then changed back 10 years later. Currently, they are in the process of returning to Linux.

Who uses Linux?

Linux operating system users are usually:

  1. Long-time supporters or hobbyists
  2. People working in the field of information technology
  3. People who own computers are too old to run Windows.
  4. Council, government, business or social organizations.
  5. People who prefer open source software, freeware and privacy.
  6. Users out of curiosity.
  7. Programmers, almost all programmers.

Is 2% important enough?

Linux does not dominate the computer world, but what the problem is. After all, this is a global operating system. Linux actually controls everything related to the Internet, from aerospace, nuclear submarines to self-driving cars. In short, this is a great operating system. 2% of the computer market is just a gentle wave of this big guy.
